'Rub-A-Dub Ridge' Art Print by Vertigo Artography

Rub-A-Dub Ridge is a perfectly timed, magnificently scaled and deeply satisfying surreal collage art print that takes the great, sweeping grandeur of the American wilderness and introduces, without warning or apology, a yellow sponge. Set against the warm, saturated palette of a 1960s National Park brochure or vintage hiking poster, the golden age of the great outdoors, when people wore plaid and hats and stood at viewpoints and looked at things properly, a spectacular mountain landscape unfolds in vivid, abundant detail: pine forested slopes in deep green and amber rolling upward toward snowcapped peaks against a brilliant turquoise sky, the kind of wilderness that appears on trail guides and travel posters and makes people immediately want to put on boots and go somewhere with no signal.

In the foreground, two figures stand at a viewpoint, seen from behind, taking in the view with the quiet appreciation of people who have walked a long way to stand exactly here, a woman in a red top and plaid trousers, a man in a plaid shirt and brown hat, the universal 1960s hiking couple, dressed correctly, present fully, completely unaware of what is happening above them.

Above them, entering the frame from the upper left with the calm, matter of fact authority of someone who has assessed the situation and brought the right equipment, is a giant hand holding a yellow sponge covered in white soapy foam scrubbing the mountain peaks with the focused, domestic efficiency of someone cleaning a worktop. The soapy foam spreads across the mountain tops where the snow should be, white, foamy, indistinguishable from a glacier at first glance and revealed, on closer inspection, as washing up foam applied by a hand the size of a mountain range. The mountains are being cleaned. The sponge is doing its job. The hikers below are having a lovely time.

The environmental wit of the piece is its deepest quality, this is an artwork about cleaning up, about restoration, about the quietly absurd idea that the wilderness, like everything else, occasionally needs someone to roll up their sleeves and give it a proper scrub. The deadpan domestic scale of the solution against the epic natural scale of the problem is the joke and the truth simultaneously. As demand grows for retro hiking art, mountain landscape prints, outdoor adventure posters and environmental humour art, Rub-A-Dub Ridge sits at the perfect intersection of vintage wilderness nostalgia, surrealist wit and the deeply satisfying observation that sometimes the answer to a very large problem is a very good sponge.

Perfect for living rooms, home offices, kitchens, outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, campers, mountain lovers, environmental advocates, eclectic interiors, creative studios and any wall that has ever looked at a mountain and thought: that could do with a clean.

Fast-paced and fun
Format: Kindle
Kiyoshi Harai is 16 and a recent graduate of the exorcist academy. He’s insanely powerful, but the problem is, he’s terrified of demons, thanks to a childhood trauma. He also has social anxiety, which only shows on the inside. On the outside, he looks cool and glowering. The first volume follows Kiyoshi from his first assignment to his first exorcism post in the boons, which he chooses because of his hero who works there. He gets over his fear of demons pretty fast, thanks to a fatherly demon he needs to banish who gives him encouragement. At his post, he enrolls to a high school and gets to work on his other anxieties. This was a fun and fast-paced start to a series. Many demons were banished, but the line between good and bad people was blurry, and Kiyoshi made some unlikely friends too. Art was good. I’d read more.

Loved it.
Format: Paperback
I’ve never read a Tezuka book I didn’t like and this was another masterpiece. Reminded me of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm”. Throughout the book I was trying to figure out how it was going to end. I had my theories, but the actual ending was perfect and it made me laugh.

Another Tezuka scifi classic
Format: Paperback
The story is a collection of short, loosely connected, stories concerning birds. Attaining higher intelligence, they begin fighting back against humanity for dominance and freedom. The first few chapters are very reminiscent of Hitchcock's "The Birds" as they, seemingly out of nowhere, start attacking people and whole cities. Eventually there is a way to communicate and negotiate with them and a truce is made, however it doesn't end there. Many generations pass and birds start gaining larger brains, talking, wearing clothes, etc. And humans devolve into feral cavemen a la, "Planet of the Apes". It is worth noting that there is a chapter featuring a black character who is drawn in a outdated, racist, charicature style. As in all Tezuka books, there's a disclaimer about things like this given the time they were written. I believe, however, that it's worth mentioning as some people feel differently about things like that and with a disclaimer you can now decide for yourself if you want to make your own judgement of the work. That one part aside, I think the work is some of his best. His ideas and artistry really are top notch. You can also plan to lookout for more manga reviews from me Mangamatt, whether here or on other platforms.

An under-appreciated Tezuka gem
Format: Paperback
Wonderfully strange book that toggles between absurd, hilarious, and poignant.

I Welcome Our New Bird Overlords
Format: Paperback
A wild ride that's basically "What if Rise of the Planet of the Apes happened with birds?!" I love it when Tezuka is just... out there, too weird to look away.
