COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Concepts & Techniques in Operations Management course. This program will equip you with an in-depth understanding of how modern operations function, how value is created through organisational processes, and how operations managers apply analytical, strategic, and behavioural tools to improve productivity and performance. You will explore both foundational theories and contemporary developments in the field, building a comprehensive understanding of how operations contribute to competitive advantage, organisational growth, and long-term sustainability. This course also connects classical academic concepts with real operational challenges to help you understand how theory and practice align in today’s dynamic business environment.

This course begins by examining the importance of the operations function and how operations management developed as an academic discipline. You will explore the purpose of a theory of operations and the classical theory of the division of labour, showing how specialisation has historically increased productivity while also creating limits and challenges that organisations must manage. This section also explains the interdependence of operations, highlighting how every process relies on others within the organisation, and how coordination and cross-functional alignment ensure operational reliability and value delivery.

The next learning area introduces the structure and nature of operations systems. You will explore the characteristics of operations systems, the important properties that determine their effectiveness, and how operations systems function as transformation processes that convert inputs into goods and services. This section also examines the properties of strategic competencies, the organisational resources that support operations, and the broader environment in which operations systems exist. You will learn the key dimensions to consider when studying the environment of an operations system, including systems control, system boundaries, external pressures, and stakeholder influences.

Further learning focuses on productivity, output, and the nature of goods and services. You will explore how operations output and productivity are measured, the distinctions between goods and services, and the role of the service revolution in reshaping operational priorities. This section also examines the three sector hypothesis and the evolution of economies beyond it, the concept of servitisation, and how service science is used to improve productivity through process innovation and customer-centred design.

The program then examines the central role of customers and relationship management in operations. You will explore customers and relationship capital, how factor analysis is used to classify behavioural intentions, and how operations managers and marketers collaborate to manage customer relationships. This section also explains why listening to customers can be challenging in operational contexts, how customer-perceived value is formed, and how quality function deployment helps translate customer needs into operational specifications.

The next section explores service design and customer interaction. You will examine customer contact and its impact on service system design, when operations should be decoupled, and the procedures used to determine which contact strategy is most appropriate for a given service. This section also introduces technology in modern operations management, the technology-induced business transformation, and the ways emerging technologies are shaping the future of operational systems and decision-making.

A further learning area focuses on coordination within and across operational processes. You will examine the principles of coordination theory, the mechanisms that enable coordinated work, and the importance of planning and control in operational environments. This section explains what operations managers can achieve through effective control systems, how to match demand with supply, and how planning horizons and planning flexibility support operational responsiveness.

The program then examines integration within operations systems. You will explore integration systems—their functions and forms—and how ERP and process management support organisational alignment. This section also introduces key ERP-related issues in operations management and the operational risks associated with complex systems. You will examine a model of operational risk and learn how to evaluate and mitigate risk factors across interconnected processes.

The final learning area explores major theories in operations management that shape modern thinking and organisational design. You will examine the neo-classical theory of the firm, the managerial theory of the firm, the behavioural theory of the firm, the transaction cost theory, and the evolutionary theory of the firm. This section helps you understand how foundational economic and organisational theories influence operations practice, decision-making, and strategic direction.

By the end of this course you will be able to analyse and evaluate operational systems, understand classical and contemporary operations theories, apply tools for improving productivity, design and control service processes, integrate technology and coordination techniques, and manage operational risks while aligning operations with organisational strategy and customer expectations.

Mixed Bag of Dog Squeaky Toys for Small Dogs
Color: 12pack, Size: Small
I recently purchased the SHARLOVY Dog Squeaky Toys for Small Dogs, a pack of stuffed animal puppy toys, and while they offer some positive aspects, there are a few drawbacks that prevent me from giving them a higher rating. One positive aspect of this toy pack is the variety it offers. With 12 different plush dog toys included, there is a range of options to keep my small dog entertained and engaged. The cute designs and soft textures are appealing, and they provide a good selection for different play sessions. The squeaky feature of these toys can be entertaining for dogs, and it adds an element of interactive play. The squeaker is relatively durable and has held up reasonably well during playtime, adding an extra level of excitement for my dog. However, the durability of these toys is a concern. While they are suitable for small dogs and light chewers, they may not withstand the rigorous chewing of more aggressive chewers or larger breeds. The seams on some toys have come apart relatively quickly, resulting in stuffing coming out or potential choking hazards. It is important to supervise playtime and monitor the condition of the toys closely. Another drawback is the size of the toys. While they are marketed for small dogs, some of the toys in the pack are quite small and may pose a choking risk for dogs that are prone to swallowing or have a tendency to tear apart toys. It is essential to choose the appropriate toy size based on your dog's breed and chewing habits. In terms of value for money, the price point for this toy pack is reasonable considering the number of toys included. However, the longevity of the toys may impact the overall value, as they may need to be replaced more frequently for dogs that are rough with their toys. In conclusion, the SHARLOVY Dog Squeaky Toys for Small Dogs offer a variety of cute and soft toys that can entertain small dogs during playtime. The squeaky feature adds to the fun, but the durability of the toys and potential choking hazards are concerns. It is important to choose appropriate toy sizes and supervise playtime to ensure the safety of your furry friend. If you have a small dog and are looking for a variety of soft and squeaky toys, this pack may be worth considering. However, if your dog is an aggressive chewer or larger in size, it may be more prudent to explore more durable and size-appropriate options to ensure the toys can withstand your dog's play habits.

Not invincible but good value
Color: 5pack, Size: Large
Great value for the money. We have 3 dogs and they are pretty strong chewers. They lasted a few months but ultimately succumbed to their inevitable doom. They arrived well packaged and with no unusual odors.

Durable & Leather. For Small-Medium Dogs
Size: 15 in, Color: Retriever, Size: 15 in, Color: Retriever
This is a great dog toy! My Pomeranian is a small guy at only 8lbs. but he sure knows how to chew and he does it as often as he can. I was throwing out toy after toy because he was tearing them to pieces after only a half hour or so. After putting my money in the garbage so many times, I decided to search for toys that would hold up to his destructive mouth. I found a lot that claimed they wouldn't fall apart but they were all more than I wanted to spend. I came across this toy and a rabbit shaped one just like this. I bought both months ago and both are still in tact after all this time. Sure the edges are a little frayed but other than that, no damage whatsoever! I'm not sure what dura fused means but that seemed promising to me when I was reading the description, also the fact that they're leather made them seem more durable to me. Both have squeakers inside and some sort of stuffing as well. I throw all of my dogs toys in the laundry or hand wash them once a week, except for these. When these toys get wet with my dogs saliva, they look like they're not meant to get wet. Even without washing, these seem fine. This toy is probably about 9" long or so if I had to guess. In my opinion, it'd be perfect for a medium sized dog. It's a tiny bit big for my little guy but he manages just fine! If you're looking for a durable toy that your small to medium dog can chew on constantly, look no further!

Always looking for less destructible dog toys
Size: 8 in, Color: Squirrel, Size: 8 in, Color: Squirrel
I am constantly searching for aggressive chewer dog toys. So many claim to be and one look and you know they haven’t met your dog!! Our golden retriever is so sweet until he gets his claws and teeth into a new toy. We nicknamed him the shredder, as he rips his new toys to pieces. I accidentally stumbled across this toy. We have never owned a leather dog toy. The squirrel is going to give Maverick a run for his money. The edges are double sewn closed. I am very impressed with the quality of this toy for $5.75 which includes the sales price and an additional 10% off coupon. Even without those two incentives the toy is less than $8 prime. The other shapes are similar or cheaper in price and now I see a 50% off 1 toy coupon when you buy 2. What a deal and the squirrel has a squeaker inside. What I like about the squirrel is that there’s less limbs or appendages for Maverick to shred off. The bunny has ears, the raccoon has hands, the buffalo has legs, the bone and retriever stick have a rope, the bear has a neck and head that could be chewed off, similar to the fox who has a tail and snout. The squirrel looks like it would be harder to destroy! The squeaker was hard to push at first but is easier now. Maverick has a black lab sister who loves squirrels, more so than she loves toys, and I found this toy searching for squirrel toys for her. It is offered in 8 other shapes. The squirrel measures almost 8” tall by 5” wide. It’s perfect for a medium or large size dog. Based on the construction of this squirrel dog toy it looks acceptable for an aggressive chewer and won’t break the bank. It’s very affordable. Always supervise! Updates to follow at Christmas:). BTW, the squirrel did not smell bad upon opening.
