In the glass, the 2023 Shiraz shows a deep garnet color with violet edges. The nose opens with brambly blackberry, black plum, and cassis, layered with cracked black pepper, graphite, and a whisper of smoked meat. Subtle notes of vanilla, cedar, and cocoa powder emerge from its time in oak, adding warmth and depth.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, with ripe dark fruit at its core—blackberry compote, mulberry, and a hint of blueberry—balanced by vibrant acidity. Fine-grained tannins lend structure without heaviness, while flavors of clove, tobacco leaf, and savory olive tapenade weave through the finish. It’s powerful yet polished: a Lazio Shiraz that bridges Old World elegance with New World boldness.

About the Winery

In the heart of Lazio, Italy, nestled near the ancient city of Satricum, lies Casale del Giglio—a winery that has transformed the region's viticulture through innovation and dedication. Founded in 1967 by Dr. Berardino Santarelli, a native of Amatrice, the estate is situated in Le Ferriere, in the province of Latina, approximately 50 kilometers south of Rome. At that time, the Agro Pontino valley was largely uncharted territory in terms of viticulture, presenting a unique opportunity for exploration and development.

In 1985, driven by a vision to unlock the region's potential, Berardino's son, Antonio Santarelli, initiated an ambitious research project. Collaborating with esteemed ampelographers and university researchers, they planted nearly 60 different experimental grape varieties on their land. This scientific endeavor, unprecedented in its scope, was led by the young enologist Paolo Tiefenthaler from Trentino. Their efforts bore fruit with significant successes in cultivating red varieties like Syrah and Petit Verdot, as well as whites such as Sauvignon, Viognier, and Petit Manseng. These varieties have since been crafted into both monovarietal wines and blends, offering exceptional quality and value.

Casale del Giglio's philosophy emphasizes the importance of exploring and harnessing the potential of lesser-known territories. They believe that the future of Italian viticulture lies not only in consolidating the image of traditional wine-producing zones but also in achieving high-quality productions with excellent value in areas previously unexplored.

The estate's flagship wine, Mater Matuta, exemplifies this innovative spirit. A rich, deep ruby-red wine, it displays outstanding personality with aromas of coffee beans, violets, ripe black cherry, coriander, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Silky and seductive, yet perfectly supported by fine tannins, Mater Matuta delivers a long, lush finish.

Through their pioneering research and commitment to excellence, Casale del Giglio has not only revitalized the Agro Pontino valley but has also made a significant mark on the broader landscape of Italian winemaking. Their journey from uncharted territory to producing world-class wines stands as a testament to the power of vision and perseverance in the world of viticulture.

not bad
Format: Kindle
I loved the plot of this book. The characters just didn’t have a lot of depth. The connections and “love” just weren’t communicated very well in the writing. The author didn’t write the sweet psycho trope very well at all either. Lachlan was just a mess of a character.

A Beta Worth Rooting For
Format: Kindle
In Spare, Violet Fox flips the omegaverse on its head, giving us a Beta heroine determined to make her mark. Joining the Beta Trials to support her sick father, she's thrown into a pack that doesn't want her, especially the possessive Alphas. But here's the twist: their sweet Omega turns out to be her scent match. Cue the angst, forbidden tension, and a slow-burn romance that will make your heart ache in the best way. Violet Fox delivers an emotional, refreshing take on the genre, proving Betas aren't "spares." They're stars.

Beta, Alpha, Omega oh my!
Format: Kindle
Omegas are precious and given to Alphas & their packs... but the Betas want in too. To this end, the Beta government is rolling out its trial of assigning a Beta to each Alpha-Omega pack. But forcing a Beta into a pack where they are not wanted will not end well... Of course, no one expected the Omega to fall for the assigned Beta. Great read and cliffhanger

A familiar story, just with…..less.
Format: Kindle
So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
