COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Overcoming Perfectionism course. This program will help you understand the nature of perfectionism, how it develops, and how it affects emotional wellbeing, relationships, work performance, and overall quality of life. You will explore the differences between healthy achievement and perfectionistic thinking, the predictors and personality traits associated with perfectionism, and the social, cognitive, and behavioural patterns that reinforce demanding self-expectations. This course also examines the psychological, physical, and interpersonal consequences of perfectionistic habits and provides practical strategies for reducing perfectionism and improving resilience, assertiveness, and life satisfaction.
This course begins by examining what the term “perfectionism” means and the distinctions between a healthy achiever and a perfectionist. You will explore how perfectionism is developed, the major predictors of perfectionistic attitudes, and why gifted children are often more vulnerable to perfectionistic tendencies. This section also examines the perfectionist’s need for control, why perfectionists may experience obsessions and compulsions, and the different types of perfectionism—self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed. You will review the general personality traits of perfectionists and learn how to assess your own level of perfectionism using established indicators. This section concludes with an exploration of the costs and benefits of perfectionism and its broad effects on daily living.
The next learning area focuses on how perfectionism influences emotions, behaviour, and wellbeing. You will explore how perfectionists are driven toward achievement, how they think about body image and health, and how perfectionistic tendencies can affect social relationships. This section examines the relationship between perfectionism and stress, including the symptoms of stress, how stress influences performance, and how perfectionism increases worry, rumination, and anxiety. You will explore the nature of worry, why worrying is mentally exhausting, what a panic attack is, and why perfectionists often feel ashamed of negative emotions or overcompensate for perceived shortcomings.
A further part of the program explores perfectionism in the workplace. You will examine how perfectionism commonly shows up at work, why procrastination significantly increases stress, and how aggressive behaviour may reflect underlying perfectionistic thinking. This section also explains why perfectionistic managers may struggle with leadership roles and the organisational consequences of unrealistic standards. You will explore strategies for changing perfectionistic thinking, including recognising demanding self-talk, reframing expectations, and accepting fallibility. This section also examines how modifying perfectionistic tendencies can improve confidence, flexibility, productivity, and wellbeing.
The next learning area focuses on behavioural and cognitive change strategies. You will explore how to change perfectionistic thinking habits, modify rigid internal rules, and practise behaviours that support gradual desensitisation to imperfection. This section examines strategies for improving communication, becoming assertive, using the parent–adult–child model, and responding constructively to criticism. You will explore how to stop procrastinating, prioritise more effectively, reclaim control of your time, relax more easily, and enjoy the present moment. This part of the course also addresses the importance of exercise, diet, and sleep in managing stress and maintaining emotional balance.
The final learning area examines perfectionism, leadership, and workplace culture. You will explore how to enjoy your work, develop a positive mental attitude, and reduce judgemental tendencies toward yourself and others. This section highlights how to become a more effective leader by modelling realistic expectations, encouraging openness, and creating a workplace culture where mistakes are acceptable and viewed as learning opportunities. You will also explore how focusing on developing the strengths of each team member increases engagement, collaboration, and team performance.
By the end of this course you will be able to recognise perfectionistic patterns, understand their impact, apply strategies to reduce unhelpful thinking and behaviour, communicate more effectively, manage stress, and build healthier relationships. You will gain the skills needed to replace rigid perfectionism with balanced achievement, self-compassion, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.
