In 'Bird Song', a new series of original lithographs made in collaboration with APW printers, Richard Lewer highlights some of Australia's threatened species - the featured birds range from vulnerable to the critically endangered. Lewer aims to create a space for these birds to be appreciated, an archive for their existence and beauty. Given that birds are so integral to the artist's practice, the vulnerability of the subject matter is not only ecologically devastating but also personally challenging.
The Gouldian Finches (Erythrura gouldiae) are small, brightly coloured birds, and arguably the most beautiful of all Australian birds. They were once widely distributed throughout the Kimberly Region, Western Australia and the Northern Territory but are now endangered, with an estimated adult population of only 2,500. These finches live in tree hollows and feed mainly on grass seeds. Inappropriate fire management poses a significant threat to their survival, as it can destroy breeding and feeding habitats. However, fire is also essential for their survival, and proper fire management, including controlled burning and responsive firefighting, is necessary to maintain the seasonal influence of fire to maintain diversity and vegetation age.
'Bird Song' premieres a new suite of fifteen original prints by Richard Lewer produced in collaboration with APW printers at Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne, 2024.
