Hegel C54 Custom Installation Amplifier

The Hegel C54 is the four-channel variant of the Hegel C5 series, a range of rack-mountable multi-channel power amplifiers from Hegel Music Systems (Oslo, Norway), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Delivering 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms across four channels, doubling to 300 watts into 4 ohms and 600 watts into 2 ohms, the C54 brings the full Hegel sound including patented SoundEngine2 distortion correction and a damping factor exceeding 2,000 to home theater, Dolby Atmos, bi-amplification, multi-zone, and commercial audio installations. For integrators and audiophiles who need four channels of genuine Hegel performance in a single 3U rack unit, the C54 is the definitive solution.

Full Hegel Performance Across Four Channels

The C54 carries over every core element of Hegel's amplifier philosophy into a purpose-built installation chassis. SoundEngine2 feed-forward distortion correction actively cancels all distortion generated within the amplifier circuits by replaying it in negative phase, functioning analogously to active noise cancellation. THD is held below 0.01% at 100 watts per channel, and the sound remains natural, smooth, and dynamically engaging regardless of programme material or listening level. The low-bias Class AB operating point enabled by SoundEngine2 means the C54 runs significantly cooler than conventional multi-channel amplifiers of equivalent power, making closed-rack installation safe and practical without forced ventilation in most applications.

Designed for Flexible System Integration

Each of the C54's four channels has individually switchable gain (23 dB or 29 dB) and individually switchable phase (0 or 180 degrees), simplifying integration into bi-amplified, active crossover, or asymmetric multi-zone systems where channel-by-channel level and polarity adjustment is required. A trigger input accepts 5 to 12V signals from any automation processor, and a daisy-chainable 11.9V trigger output allows multiple C5 units or other components to be powered on and off together from a single trigger command. The C54 shares its 3U chassis with the C53 and C55, with integrated rack ears, adjustable detachable rear mount ears, and supplied feet for free-standing use outside a rack.

Key Features

  • Four Channels at 150 Wpc (8 Ω) / 300 Wpc (4 Ω) / 600 Wpc (2 Ω): High-headroom power across all four channels simultaneously for theater, bi-amp, or multi-zone use
  • SoundEngine2 Distortion Correction: Hegel's patented feed-forward technology dynamically cancels all amplifier-generated distortion in real time for a natural, smooth, and fatigue-free presentation
  • Damping Factor Greater Than 2,000: Deep, controlled bass and complete loudspeaker driver authority across all four channels
  • Stable to 2-Ohm Loads: Drives any loudspeaker system regardless of impedance, including passive crossover designs with low-impedance bass sections
  • Low-Bias Class AB Operation: SoundEngine2 enables significantly reduced idle heat, making closed-rack installation practical without forced ventilation in most environments
  • Individual Per-Channel Gain Switching: Switchable between 23 dB and 29 dB per channel for precise level matching in any multi-channel system
  • Individual Per-Channel Phase Switching: 0 or 180 degrees per channel to correct polarity at the amplifier without upstream signal processing
  • 4 x Balanced XLR and 4 x Unbalanced RCA Inputs: Full balanced and unbalanced connectivity on every channel for compatibility with any processor, preamplifier, or DSP platform
  • Trigger Input and Daisy-Chain Trigger Output: 5 to 12V trigger in; 11.9V trigger out for chaining multiple units; enables fully automated system power management
  • 3U 19-Inch Rack-Mount with Integrated Ears: Adjustable and detachable rear rack ears; supplied feet for free-standing use when rack installation is not required
  • THD Below 0.01% at 100W: Vanishingly low distortion maintained across all four channels under full operating conditions

Typical Applications

  • Home theater front left, centre, right, and surround channels in a 4.0 or 4.1 configuration
  • Dolby Atmos height and surround channel amplification paired with a separate amplifier for front channels
  • Bi-amplification of two pairs of high-performance loudspeakers
  • Active crossover systems requiring four independent amplifier channels
  • Four-zone whole-home audio distribution
  • Commercial installations in restaurants, hotels, studios, and retail environments

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Hegel C54?

The Hegel C54 is a four-channel rack-mount power amplifier delivering 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms, part of the Hegel C5 series. It features SoundEngine2 distortion correction, a damping factor exceeding 2,000, individual per-channel gain and phase switching, balanced and unbalanced inputs on every channel, and daisy-chainable trigger control for custom installation, home theater, bi-amplification, and multi-zone audio applications.

What is the difference between the Hegel C54 and the C55?

The C54 and C55 share the same 3U chassis, SoundEngine2 technology, per-channel gain and phase control, trigger input and output, and power output per channel. The only difference is channel count: the C54 has four channels and the C55 has five. Choose the C54 for four-channel applications such as bi-amping two speaker pairs or powering a 4.0 theater; choose the C55 when a fifth channel is needed for a centre speaker or additional zone.

Can the Hegel C54 be used for bi-amplification?

Yes. The C54's four independent channels with individual gain and phase switching make it ideal for bi-amplifying two pairs of loudspeakers simultaneously. Per-channel gain adjustment allows precise level matching between bass and treble sections without additional passive attenuation in the signal path.

Can the Hegel C54 be used in a Dolby Atmos home theater?

Yes. A C54 can power four channels of a larger Atmos system, covering height or surround channels while a separate amplifier handles the front stage, or it can serve as a complete front and surround amplifier in a 4.0 or 4.1 layout. Multiple C5 units can be combined and daisy-chained via trigger for larger Atmos configurations.

Does the Hegel C54 run hot in a closed rack?

No. SoundEngine2 enables a low-bias Class AB operating point that significantly reduces idle heat compared to conventional high-power multi-channel amplifiers. The C54 is designed for rack installation and runs cool enough for closed or semi-closed rack environments in most applications. Hegel recommends 1U of clear space above and below for airflow.

Does the Hegel C54 work with Control4, Crestron, or Savant?

Yes. The C54's 5 to 12V trigger input and daisy-chainable 11.9V trigger output integrate directly with Control4, Crestron, Savant, and any automation platform that supports voltage trigger control, enabling fully automated and remote power management across the entire installation.

100% worth it - I recommend to EVERYONE
I've seen coworkers and instructors using folding screens behind them for video calls since the pandemic started, and I finally gave in and purchased this one. I freaking LOVE it. I love that I can be on a video call and not have to worry about the angle of my laptop or having people 'in' my home while I'm at work. It's so nice. I may eventually buy and deconstruct a wall hanging to create some colorful fabric panels instead of the brown, but (and I say this as NOT a brown fabric-lover) the brown looks pretty nice. It's a very dark brown, and it serves as completely neutral while still feeling a bit warm. - No need for tools to assemble, even though it says screwdriver. - One thing: I thought it would fold up flat, and it does NOT fold up flat. Important to know. I just keep it folded up into a 16.5" (grabbed a tape measure to check) square column by my desk and unfold whenever I have video conferences. If you can't tell, I really like having this thing around. 100% recommend and would buy again.

it's a utility screen
Color: Black, Size: 3-Panel
It's a basic, utilitarian screen. It's what I expected it to be. Assembly isn't hard, but it does require two people when stretching the fabric between the poles. I got it to use in a closet to separate the water heater from the washer/dryer, so it'll be perfect for that. Pros: it's opaque and tall (my 6'4" husband can't see over it unless he is standing against it) and I like the ability for the three pieces to stand separately of each other. Cons: it's flimsy. It wobbles and will tip over easily.

Great for the price
The item is great bit I wish it were a bit more sturdy and it folded flat. It folds into a square so it does take up some room when it's not in use.

Cheap, screw holes don't line up, screen is to short, and bars take WD-40 and a mallet
This has been my worst purchase on Amazon ever. DO NOT BUY. My first issue was that bars #4 and #5 would not go together, I ended up buying WD-40 and a mallet and that kind of got them together. Now I went to but the screen on (which is almost see thought) and the screen is to short. I can't attached the bottom bar to the tall bar. The screw hole is in the wrong spot, so the screen is not secure. No amount of pulling on the screen will make it grown .25" longer. Since I can't get the bars secure the walls are not steady and fall over easily. The feet did go together very nice. I can't return them according to Amazons policy. I bought 2 sets. I'm not going to try to build the other set I have. And I can't take apart the first set, since the bars are so tightly together. Also the polls have rust on them.

Very Poor Built Quality
Color: Black, Size: 3-Panel
They use cheap tarp like cloth that you might find on a tent, so it is not suitable as a teleconferencing background without blur applied. The legs are flimsy and lack rubber feet, so it will scratch floors. The tubing is flimsy and very hard to move and adjust. This is only good if you are setting it up somewhere like a gym or a garage.
