Orchestre Badema's Mohamed Doumbia leads a band at Bamako's after-hours club No Limit, playing psychedelic 1960s and '70s Malian rock with a local supergroup featuring Adama Dramé and Baba Coulibaly.

You'd be forgiven for assuming 'Enregisrement Live No Limit Bamako' was one of those long-lost records Mississippi has a knack for collecting and reissuing. It's harder to believe, in fact, that it was recorded fairly recently in one of Bamako's hidden neighborhood bars, spots that open after midnight and continue playing live music until the crowd of old heads disperses much later. Doumba's music harks back to simpler times, referencing artists like Salif Keita, Kante Manfila and Mady Casse and strangely avoids nostalgia. There's a grit that's hard to ignore, enhanced by the whoops of the local crowd and the feeling that these off-grid clubs are spaces where some of Mali's best players get together and reflect on the music that really shaped them. And that rhythm section? Next level.
