COURSE OVERVIEW:
Welcome to the Leadership Skills Development course. This program will equip you with the essential qualities, functional skills, behavioural capabilities, and strategic insights required to grow as a leader and to help others develop their leadership potential. You will explore what makes leadership development critical, what leaders must be, know, and do, and how leadership operates across multiple organisational levels. This course also examines leadership functions such as defining tasks, planning, motivating, evaluating, controlling, and organising—while emphasising the development of wisdom, reflection, proactivity, and ethical influence.
This course begins by examining the importance of leadership development and what individuals must be to become successful leaders. You will explore the essential qualities of leaders, the generic traits associated with effective leadership, and the knowledge leaders need to perform their roles confidently. This section introduces the four forms of authority, how they influence group dynamics, and what leaders must do to meet group needs. You will explore the three areas of need—task, team, and individual—and how these needs interact to form the foundation of the functional approach to leadership. This section also explains why leaders must not act outside their role, and how core leadership functions can be translated into learnable skills. You will examine how leadership operates at different levels—operational, managerial, and strategic—and the specific responsibilities that arise at each level.
The next learning area focuses on leadership functions that drive team and organisational performance. You will explore the function of defining the task, how to plan for your team and organisation, and the meaning of the planning continuum. This section covers guidelines for effective briefing, the importance of team building, and the controlling function in leadership, including how leaders monitor performance, ensure accountability, and maintain alignment with goals. You will examine the function of evaluating teams and individuals, the criteria of a high-performance team, and the function of motivating people. This section also explores the five categories of the hierarchy of needs, key principles of motivation, and the organising function of leadership. You will learn the most important words in leadership, the key questions that guide effective leadership, and the practical actions needed to lead teams successfully.
A further part of the program examines personal leadership development. You will explore how to develop yourself as a leader, how to be prepared, how to be proactive, and how to be reflective in your leadership practice. This section introduces how to lead at the strategic level, the functions of a strategic leader, and the importance of practical wisdom in guiding decisions and shaping long-term direction. You will explore the importance of leadership for desirable change, and how leaders grow other leaders by creating supportive environments, developmental opportunities, and structured progression pathways.
The final learning area focuses on building leadership capacity within organisations. You will explore how to develop a leadership development strategy, the importance of selection for leadership development, and the importance of training and career development. This section also examines the role of line managers as leadership developers, the importance of organisational culture in cultivating leadership, and the role of the chief executive in modelling and promoting leadership excellence. You will explore how to find greatness in people by recognising talent, providing challenge, and nurturing potential. This section concludes with leadership checklists for achieving tasks, building and maintaining teams, and developing individuals—practical tools that support ongoing leadership improvement.
By the end of this course you will be able to understand the qualities and skills required for leadership, apply functional leadership techniques, motivate and develop teams, lead at strategic levels, and contribute to the growth of leadership talent across your organisation.
