Installation Guide

Professional installation is highly recommended. The general steps for replacing lower unit seals are as follows:

  1. Drain Gear Lube: Completely drain the old lubricant from the gearcase by removing the drain/fill screws.
  2. Remove Lower Unit: Detach the lower unit from the outboard engine's exhaust housing.
  3. Disassemble Components: Remove the water pump assembly and driveshaft bearing housing to access the old seals.
  4. Extract Old Seals: Carefully remove all old seals and o-rings, taking care not to scratch the housing surfaces.
  5. Clean and Inspect: Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces and inspect components for wear or damage.
  6. Install New Seals: Using appropriate seal drivers, install the new seals and o-rings. Ensure they are seated correctly and apply a light coat of marine grease.
  7. Reassemble: Reinstall the bearing housing and water pump with the new gaskets.
  8. Reinstall Lower Unit: Mount the lower unit back onto the engine, ensuring the driveshaft, water tube, and shift shaft are properly aligned.
  9. Refill with Lube: Fill the gearcase with the manufacturer-specified lower unit lubricant until it flows out of the upper vent hole. Reinstall and tighten both screws with new washers.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How can I be sure this seal kit fits my Johnson 70HP engine?
This kit is designed for Johnson/Evinrude 35-75HP engines (1975-1988) with the small gearcase. While it fits most models in this range, we strongly recommend checking your specific engine part number against our cross-reference list (0396355, 0777562). Some variations exist, particularly for specific 70HP models, so visual comparison with your old seals before installation is also a good practice.

What are the common signs of a failing lower unit seal?
Key indicators include milky, water-contaminated gear lube (which looks like coffee with cream) when you drain it, visible oil leaking from the propeller shaft or driveshaft area, or a recurring loss of gear lube. Any of these symptoms suggest it's time to inspect and replace the seals.

Do I need special tools for this installation?
While disassembly can be performed with standard mechanic's tools, correctly installing seals without damaging them often requires specific tools like seal drivers and pullers. To prevent leaks and ensure a lasting repair, professional installation is strongly recommended if you are not experienced with lower unit service.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.

How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.

What is your warranty and return policy?
This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.

If pump doesn't seem to work
Size: For 85-300 HP, Size: For 85-300 HP
Hi....I apologize it took me a while to get back to you with my results. Here is what I discovered about the pump and will also apply to some of the other comments I read in the reviews with people not getting the pump to work: 1.) I removed the pump to check the proper direction of the impeller and it was correct as can be seen in the photo. 2.) I built a pump shaft attachement so that I could operate the pump with a power drill. 3.) I attached the water muff to the unit and tried to pump water.....it wouldn't do so. What I did see however was that even at high hose discharge and small leakage at the muff I could not fill the water cavity in the housing. 4.) I installed a strap around the muff and tightened it very tight and THEN at high hose pressure I was able to get the cavity to fill with water. 5.) At that point I activated the drill and was able to get the pump to actually pump water. I then removed the pump housing and removed the O-Ring that resides on top of the impeller, reassembled and it would not pump water. Since the O-Ring sits higher than the original does I wanted to make sure that it was necessary to have it in the pump. 6.) I reassembled the engine and kept the tight strap on the bottom and finally it pumped water into the engine. My conclusion that you can reply to other buyers if they have a problem: Do NOT underestimate 2 things....1.)the lack of ability of the pump to draw water up AND 2.)the fact that if the muff leaks it will NOT fill the cavity when common sense says it should. This was a 120hp Johnson. The engine bottom must be immersed fully or the muff must be very tight on the lower unit for the pump to function. Please feel free to post this if you wish.
