Maintaining the perfect seal at higher pressures that are found with performance engines usually puts extreme stress loads on these washers which run the risk of deforming and or damaging the stock washers. The stock washers are not always a perfectly flat surface so any signs of warping or uneven surfaces on the washers can cause the bolts/nuts to loose the correct tension when under excessive loads.
