In 'Bird Song', a new series of original lithographs made in collaboration with APW printers, Richard Lewer highlights some of Australia's threatened species - the featured birds range from vulnerable to the critically endangered. Lewer aims to create a space for these birds to be appreciated, an archive for their existence and beauty. Given that birds are so integral to the artist's practice, the vulnerability of the subject matter is not only ecologically devastating but also personally challenging.
The Night Parrot (Pezoporus occidentalis) is one of the most shy, elusive and mysterious birds in the world. First recorded in 1845, it then disappeared, with no confirmed records of the bird between 1912 and 1979. It has since been sighted in 2013, and one was live captured and tagged in 2015. It is declared a critically endangered species with population estimates ranging from 40-300 remaining birds. As a ground-dwelling, nocturnal bird they’re ideal prey for feral cats. Like many vulnerable birds, there is a need for implementing strong fire management plans, as the bird’s preferred spinifex habitat is susceptible to unmanaged wildfire. Without action to intervene and reduce these risks, the future of this small population is precarious.
'Bird Song' premieres a new suite of fifteen original prints by Richard Lewer produced in collaboration with APW printers at Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne, 2024.
