This is a truly remarkable opportunity to own this exceptional genuine fossilised Bothremydidae Maghrebiana skull that carries both scientific and historical significance., an extinct species of side-necked turtle that once inhabited the ancient waterways of North Africa over 60 million years ago. Carefully examined and verified by the Natural History Museum in London during its exhibit. The skull has been professionally air-braided in our laboratory with particular attention given to removing the bedrock [matrix] from the internal skull, ensuring both visual completeness and structural stability. The fossil features a natural palette of warm brown tones and retains a beautiful 3D form. The surrounding matrix has been air-braided away, a delicate process that helps maintain the integrity of the fossil while removing any excess sediment.
The condition of the skull is quite remarkable overall. Aside from a small section of the nasal area that was lost during fossilisation – a common occurrence with specimens of this age – the piece remains largely intact and well-preserved. Specimens of Bothremydidae Maghrebiana are incredibly rare. Only a limited number of skulls have ever been discovered, and even fewer are in such a complete and well-preserved state. These turtles lived during the Late Cretaceous to early Paleocene period, and most finds have come from fossil-rich deposits in Morocco and the surrounding region.
Because of their rarity and the insight they provide into the evolution of side-necked turtles, fossils of this species are highly prized by both collectors and researchers. Their value has steadily grown over time, particularly when associated with respected institutions - whether you're a private collector, an enthusiast of natural history, or someone simply fascinated by the distant past, this fossilised skull offers an extraordinary chance to connect with a lost world that is rarely discovered today, making it a great investment piece as well as a collectors item.
