About the work

Mequitta Ahuja has created Cradle, 2022, especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition ‘A Century of The Artist’s Studio: 1920 – 2020’, 24 February – 5 June 2022.

Cradle, 2022 portrays a woman holding a baby, herself cradled against the body of another woman. Ahuja has repeated this image in several iterations, basing on it a recent body of work, collectively titled Ma, which encapsulates her experience of becoming a mother just as her own mother was dying.  In Cradle, 2022, Ahuja takes up the central image of the Western figurative tradition, the mother and child. By reversing the narrative of the Pieta, she depicts the continuity of love through the generations.

About the artist

Mequitta Ahuja (b. 1976 Baltimore, MD, USA; lives and works in Baltimore) is a contemporary figurative painter with African American and Indian American roots. Ahuja explores in her work both the politics of personal identity and the wider function of self-portraiture in Western genre painting, referencing historic figures like Poussin, Velasquez and her mentor Kerry James Marshall. In her large figurative paintings, described as ‘pictures within pictures’, she simplifies form and includes common motifs and tropes of the tradition; hand gestures, swags of fabric, meeting the viewer's gaze, creased paper presented as trompe l'oeil, architecture that frames a narrative, one-point perspective and the allegorical figure.  She bridges these art historical references with personal autobiography, presenting the daily activities of an artist in her studio space from the physical work of painting and handling canvases to the subject reading and writing.

Best facial sunscreen I have used
Coola makes the best facial sunscreen, and I have tried many brands previous to using Coola. The texture is light and creamy without being oily, absorbing well and leaving no white residue. It does not clog my pores and nor cause those white bumps that last for months. Coola sunscreen works well to protect my skin from sunburn and from making more freckles and dark spots. It has no perfumy fragrance, much to my relief. Once it has dried, I can apply concealer or powder over it. No oily streaks or caking of other make-up so I have no excuse to avoid wearing this sunscreen every day. I have recommended Coola facial sunscreen to my friends who had laser dermabrasion. Their skin is more sensitive to both perfumed chemicals and sun exposure, and they have given good reports too.

Pricey, but worth it.
Coola products were included in a swag bag for a work vacation at a resort & I’ve not looked back. (The smell of the body spray sunscreen made me wish I could eat it, tbh.) This product has become my daily sunscreen as it’s the only one I’ve tried that doesn’t cause my skin to break out. I love the natural ingredients in their products AND that it doesn’t add to reef barrier breakdown. I only wish the brand wasn’t so pricey, but the benefits are worth it to me.

Terrific sunscreen!
I found out about the Sun screen from a youtuber who does Amazon favorites videos. At first, I thought she was nuts for advertising a $32 sun screen especially for the size it is. I really wanted an everyday sun screen that wasn't thick and goopy. I don't mind of I'm going to the beach or pool but a lot of them are a little much for every day use. Im trying to be better at protecting my face.. When I came across this I decided to splurge and try it. I hate to admit it but I'm so glad I did! It has a slight scent but nothing over powering at all. Its truly a weightless sunscreen that is perfect! I put it on before work and it doesn't make me look greasy or anything. You could probably use it under make up of you really wanted to, I just haven't tried it yet. My only complaint is the price but I haven't tried anything as good ad this! I've seen Ulta have sales on it every once in a while.
