The smoking jacket originated back in the 1850s when tobacco smoking became a popular after diner activity where the gentlemen would put on their smoking jacket and retire to the smoking room. To protect their clothing from the smell of smoke and falling ash, velvet was traditionally used, but over time other materials such as silk and wool have been introduced. The classic- style of the men’s smoking jacket features turn-up cuffs, a shawl collar and braided piping. Usually fastened by a toggle or button, the smoking jacket robe currently come with a tie belt for easy fastening. The customary colours for a smoking jacket would have been navy blue, burgundy or a dark green and could have had a pattern comprising of checks, paisley, or herringbone, while maintaining a solid colour on the cuffs and collar.
