COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Understanding & Managing Depression course. This program has been designed to equip you with the knowledge, awareness, and practical strategies required to understand depression, recognise its symptoms, support individuals experiencing it, and navigate the treatment pathways available. You will explore what depression is, what causes it, how it is diagnosed, the different types that exist, and how it differs from normal sadness. This course also examines risk factors, family considerations, relapse prevention, treatment methods, and the complex relationships between depression, grief, alcohol use, medical conditions, and wider life circumstances.

This course begins by examining what depression is, what causes depression, and the symptoms that individuals commonly experience. You will explore how depression is diagnosed, what constitutes a major depressive episode, and the different types of depression recognised in clinical practice. This section also explains how to differentiate depression from normal sadness and addresses the misconception that depression only affects people undergoing hardship. You will explore medical conditions associated with depression, why doctors may diagnose depression even when patients do not feel depressed, what bipolar disorder is, and why mood swings alone do not necessarily indicate manic-depressive illness. This section also discusses whether mild depression leads to quicker recovery, what individuals diagnosed with depression may tell their family and friends, and the risk factors that contribute to its development.

The next learning area focuses on vulnerability, family history, support, and the relationship between depression and grief. You will explore why certain people are more susceptible to depression, the hereditary considerations for children of affected individuals, and how family members can support a loved one who is experiencing depression. This section also examines how grief can resemble major depression, the relationship between grief, depression and alcohol abuse, and whether individuals previously treated for depression can prevent future episodes. You will also explore what should be done when a family member refuses to seek help, reinforcing the importance of safety planning, gentle encouragement, and community support structures.

A further learning area examines treatment approaches and how they relate to the type and severity of depression. You will explore the different types of treatment available, whether the type of depression determines the treatment required, and the various talk therapies used to support recovery. This section explains cognitive–behavioural therapy, the potential risks associated with psychotherapy, and how therapy works even when depression is linked to chemical imbalance. You will explore the side effects of medication, common questions about how long medication must be taken, and whether medication or therapy is more effective. This section also discusses natural remedies, addresses concerns about medication affecting alertness or personality, explains why mood stabilisers may be prescribed alongside antidepressants, and identifies when hospitalisation becomes necessary.

Another learning area focuses on special populations and co-occurring conditions. You will explore how alcoholism and depression are connected, whether children can experience depression, and why depression is more common in women. This section also explains postpartum blues, whether they indicate clinical depression, and how hormonal factors influence mood. You will examine how thyroid disorders interact with depression and whether treatment of low thyroid levels improves depressive symptoms. This section also considers workplace concerns, such as whether individuals with depression should inform their employers, and explores the likelihood of relapse after recovery.

The final learning area examines risk, relapse, and safety. You will explore whether individuals can become depressed again after improvement, the long-term patterns associated with depressive disorders, and how early intervention supports better outcomes. This section also examines the risk of suicide among individuals diagnosed with depression, the warning signs associated with suicidal thinking, and the urgency of engaging professional support when these risks arise. The focus throughout remains on safety, compassion, evidence-based support, and practical approaches to managing depression in real-life situations.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand the causes, symptoms, and types of depression; differentiate it from normal sadness; recognise risk factors and vulnerable populations; support family members experiencing depression; understand treatment options and their effectiveness; respond appropriately to resistance, relapse, and co-occurring conditions; and apply safe, informed strategies that reduce risk, encourage recovery, and promote long-term wellbeing.

No more lost fidgets
Color: Brown
My son has a million fidgets to help him focus and this is a great tray to store them in and keep them in one place. Looks very pish posh for what it is and adds a nice bit of decor to his desk without looking juvenile.
