Holzmaden is most famous for its complete and articulated skeletons of large, Jurassic marine reptiles including ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, and crocodilians, even those persevered with traces of soft tissues. The shale has yielded ammonites, bivalve, belemnites, cephalopods, crustaceans, marine fish pterosaurs, dinosaurs, and plants. Accumulations of large pyritized sea lilies attached to floating driftwood logs are among the most beautiful finds in the Holzmaden shale.
