The spiny box pufferfish is a small, eye-catching marine fish known for its unusual shape and striking appearance. Its body is rigid and box-like, covered in sharp, protruding spines that provide protection from predators. Unlike most fish, it lacks traditional scales and instead has a tough, armored skin.

Typically found in warm, tropical oceans, the spiny box pufferfish often displays vibrant colors such as yellow, tan, or brown, decorated with dark spots or intricate patterns that help it blend into coral reefs and sandy seabeds. Its large, expressive eyes and small mouth give it a curious, almost cartoonish look.

When threatened, this fish has the remarkable ability to inflate its body by gulping in water (or air when out of water), causing its spines to stand out even more and making it much harder for predators to swallow. Like other pufferfish, it may also contain toxins as an additional defense mechanism.

Despite its defensive adaptations, the spiny box pufferfish is generally a slow swimmer, relying more on its armor and camouflage than speed. It feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and crustaceans, using its beak-like mouth to crush hard shells.

Overall, the spiny box pufferfish is a fascinating species that combines quirky appearance with clever survival strategies, making it a standout inhabitant of coral reef ecosystems.

Care Instructions:

Tank Size & Setup

Spiny box puffers require a well-established marine aquarium of at least 50–100 gallons, depending on the species and adult size. Provide plenty of open swimming space along with live rock for hiding and exploration. Use smooth décor, as their delicate skin and spines can be easily damaged.

Water Conditions

Maintain stable saltwater conditions:

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: Low (preferably under 20 ppm)

High water quality is essential, as puffers are sensitive to poor conditions.

Diet & Feeding

Feed a varied diet of meaty marine foods such as:

  • Shrimp
  • Clams
  • Mussels
  • Crabs
  • High-quality frozen or prepared foods

They have strong, beak-like teeth that continuously grow, so include hard-shelled foods to help wear them down.

Behavior & Tank Mates

Spiny box puffers are generally peaceful but may nip at slow-moving or long-finned fish. Avoid housing them with aggressive species or very small fish/invertebrates that may be seen as food. They are best kept with calm, compatible tank mates.

Special Considerations

  • Puffers can release toxins if severely stressed, which may harm other tank inhabitants.
  • They are slow swimmers and should not compete with aggressive feeders.
  • Avoid exposure to air when possible, as it can cause harmful inflation.

Maintenance

Perform regular water changes (10–20% weekly or biweekly) and monitor water parameters closely. A strong filtration system is recommended to handle their messy eating habits.

This species is best suited for intermediate to experienced aquarists.

A few I loved but the rest didn't excite me
Format: Paperback
I got this book because I wasn’t sure that I wanted a book of her complete poems. This one selects from each of her volumes of poetry (she was deceased at the time of its publication). I found that I almost exclusively liked poems from her book Diving into the Wreck, which won the National Book Award. So in the end, I came away from this volume not wanting to read her complete work but wanting to read Diving into the Wreck in its entirety. This pains me somewhat. I think of Adrienne Rich as a feminist ground-breaker and icon. I came away from this realizing I probably like her essays and books tackling how women are treated more than I like her poetry. I sensed in her reserve in her poetry, that she was not wanting to bring us entirely into the impetus of the poem, holding us at a bit of a distance and not being specific. While that isn’t true of all of her poetry, that’s the feel I was getting from much of it. One thing that struck me is that in this volume, there was little evidence of her voice as an activist. I don’t know if that’s true of her poetry in general or if it’s a result of the editorial choices in this volume. Most of the poetry was very much about relationship, about how people treat each other, whether individuals or groups. Not a lot of the poetry in this volume stuck with me. I would read it and then it was gone. Out of 400 pages of poetry, I marked only 12 poems. So I was disappointed that I didn’t connect more with Adrienne Rich’s poetry, especially since her poem “Diving into the Wreck” (from the book by the same name) is one of my favorite poems. I guess more evidence that I’m a fan of specific poems more than I’m a fan of poets.
