The 2019 Domaine de la Motte Chablis Premier Cru Beauroy is a perfect example of retaining freshness in a warm vintage. There is a deft touch of oak which compliments the ripe citrus fruit character, with a long finish wound around Chablis’ classic, nervy acidity. Though these wines are approachable and provide immediate drinking, they would greatly reward cellaring for 3-5 years to allow for further complexity to emerge”

The price increases of village Burgundy are well noted. It could be argued however, those who were looking for the sweet spot of quality and value, couldn’t see the wood for the trees. A strong case could be made that Chablis, and particularly the 1er Cru wines are some of the best value wines on the planet. Recent warm vintages of 2018 and 20 in particular have given a style of Chablis which is approachable in youth and with concentration and power that point to quality. The wines are made with the same care and skill as their well-heeled cousins further South, but as yet, prices have not caught up. Domaine de la Motte are a family-run winery handed down from father to son since 1950. They are fastidious about producing concentrated, mineral and very precise wines which reflect the particular terroirs of Chablis, with vines on both Portlandian and Kimmeridgian soils. Motte's wines are regularly chosen for the Tastevinage label, a rigorous selection by the Confrérie des Chevaliers de Tastevin of wines they regard as offering the best of the region in terms of quality and style.
