About the work

Caroline Achaintre has created Skinz, 2021, a series of eight unique wall-based ceramics especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Eileen Agar: Angel of Anarchy, 19 May – 29 Aug 2021.

Each work in the series is an amalgamation of two differently textured pieces of clay, which are  inlaid into one another. These works are a nod to Eileen Agar’s assemblage works and surrealist spirit, whilst perhaps taking a more subtle approach  than the surrealists assemblages. Resembling masks, the delicate mesh of clay evokes the process of a skin graft. For Achaintre, there are two  spirits contained within the entity of the mask, which could be seen as a synonym to the subconscious, or a metaphor for someone getting under your skin.

About the artist

Caroline Achaintre’s (b.France in 1969), lives and works in London. She is known for her sculptures, made of wool and ceramic and her works on paper. Her works are inspired by multiple and diverse cultural references, such as European carnivals, primitivism, German Expressionism and science fiction.

Achaintre’s work often evokes the possible coexistence of several characters within the same being, and the tensions generated by duality. At once abstract and figurative - her work can take the form of a mask, a garment, or an animal - revealing anthropomorphic forms along with a particular interest in animism. For Achaintre, this plurality of possible interpretations, questions our own capacity to be in the world, as individuals defined by complex and multiple identities.
