Hindsight is powerful and complex-an idea explored on The Greatest Mistake Of My Life, the second album from Cardiff's Holding Absence. Building on their 2019 debut and singles like "Gravity" and "Birdcage," the band returns with songs that vocalist Lucas Woodland calls their truest representation yet. "This album tells stories through the lens of hindsight, regret, and reflection," Lucas explains. Themes include celebrating life in the face of death, fearing love, and masking depression. Emotion isn't rigid-it's not just love or sadness-it's everything in between. Inspired by a 1930s song recorded by Dame Gracie Fields and later covered by Lucas' great uncle, the album closes with a heartfelt homage. Holding Absence-Lucas, bassist James Joseph, and drummer Ashley Green-infuse the record with contemplative spirit. Tracks like "Beyond Belief" explore the risk of loving someone forever, while "Die Alone (In Your Lover's Arms)" and "In Circles" reflect loneliness and monotony. The album soundtracks life's journey without prescribing how to feel-just encouraging listeners to embrace their emotions, whatever they may be.
