  • Approx. 11" long x 10 1/2" wide x 6" deep, 17" tall with base
  • From Tanzania/ Mozambique
  • Close to the Makonde People, the Makua People are established on the banks of the Zambezi River. They are present in the Mtwara region of southern Tanzania and northern Mozambique.
  • These masks are associated with Male and Female Initiations. The German ethnographer, Karl Weule, reported that the male and female masks were used to celebrate the emergence of young women from Initiation Camps. Jorge and Margot Dias have studied the Makonde over the past thirty years and indicate that masks are worn in Mapiko Dances associated with the Initiation of both men and women.
  • Initiation includes instruction in the skills of adulthood, as well as in Makua and Makonde People's traditional dances, songs, and the costumes and Secrets of the Mapiko masks. The initiates are told that the masks are not the spirits of the dead, but are worn by living men, and after a period of training in dance, they wear the masks in a great festival at the center of the Village.
  • The masks may also appear during an Ngoma Ceremony in which adolescents are taught about marriage and the demands of adult family life (Dias 1961: 31, 46, 57-60; Dias and Dias 1964: 56-81; 1970: 159-217).
  • Makonde artists add to the naturalism of their carvings by using beeswax and human hair to represent scarification patterns and fashionable hairstyles. Many of the female masks include the large lip labrets that Makonde women used to wear. -- Professor Christopher D. Roy, School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa, 1991.

Very nice cabinet
Very good quality and quite sturdy, although it is a bit heavy. It took some time and it was not easy but I put it together by myself. I love the color. It looks great in my bathroom that already has a lighted vanity mirror. Overall, I recommend this cabinet.

Great, Large sturdy cabinet
Color: Black, Size: 23x29, Color: Black, Size: 23x29
I was looking to add more storage to my tint bathroom, and so a cabinet for over the toilet was my first plan of attack. This cabinet is large, has a semi open niche (protected from hella dust), and the doors match the style of my builders vanity, so i went with it. Assembly: It was VERY easy to assemble. Some things you get off amazon are a nightmare, this was thankfully pretty quick and sturdy. It came with all the hardware I needed, and the only assembly tool was a Philips Head screwdriver, and the different pieces were labeled well. Mounting: THE WALL ANCHORS INCLUDED ARE TRASH. Thank you for attending my TED talk. The cleat for mounting is about a foot long, so while i couldnt get it mounted in 2 studs, i mounted one side in a stud and used a toggle bolt for the other side. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND using a toggle bolt for something this heavy, and having one end directly in a stud. The french cleat mount meant i could slide the cabinet a bit to center it above the toilet, but with some lifting. That isnt gonna move at all with everyday use. I also like that i can take it down and put it back up easily. Smell: I didnt notice any weird smells on mine, tho it did sit in my hallway for about a week before i got around to assembling it. I used some stick and peel tile to dress up mine, and ill also add some hardware to make it look more bespoke, but overall im super thrilled with it. Would recommend.
