Installation Guide

Follow these general steps to replace the lower unit seals. Refer to your engine's service manual for detailed instructions.

  1. Drain the oil: Start by completely draining the gearcase oil.
  2. Remove lower unit: Detach the lower unit from the outboard engine's driveshaft housing.
  3. Disassemble: Carefully disassemble the gearcase to access the water pump, bearing carriers, and shafts.
  4. Remove old seals: Extract the old propeller shaft seals, driveshaft seals, O-rings, and gaskets.
  5. Clean surfaces: Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces and component housings, removing any old sealant or corrosion.
  6. Install new seals: Lubricate the new seals with a light coat of marine grease and press them into place, ensuring they are perfectly seated.
  7. Reassemble gearcase: Reinstall shafts, carriers, and the water pump assembly using the new gaskets and O-rings provided.
  8. Reattach lower unit: Mount the lower unit back onto the engine.
  9. Refill with lubricant: Fill the gearcase with the manufacturer-recommended lower unit lubricant to the proper level.
  10. Check for leaks: Before operation, inspect the unit for any signs of oil or water leaks.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this fits my engine?
This kit fits Johnson/Evinrude 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, and 75 HP 2-stroke "large case" models from 1998 and newer. Your gearcase must have 3 water intake holes per side and a 20" transom length. The best way to ensure a match is to cross-reference your existing part number with those listed, such as OEM 5000309 or 396349.

What are the signs of a failing gearcase seal?
Common signs include discovering milky, cream-colored gear lube (indicating water intrusion), visible oil leaks around the propeller shaft or under the water pump housing, or a persistent smell of gear oil after the engine has been tilted up.

Does this kit include everything for a full reseal?
Yes, it is a comprehensive kit containing the primary seals for the propeller shaft and driveshaft, as well as the necessary O-rings and gaskets for reassembly of the lower unit components like the bearing carrier and shift cover.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.

Good Value, Nice Fabric, But Could Have Better Finishing.
I'm 5'3 and 125# and the size small was a near perfect fit, although I hope I don't gain any weight. These have an elastic waistband in addition to the drawstring and the elastic is pretty strong, so if you are on the border between sizes, I'd recommend sizing up. I was a little annoyed with how these arrived - they come in a box, but inside the box the set I got was balled up in and in a plastic bag then shoved into the box. I suspect I may have gotten a set that was a return, because I can't imagine them being packaged that way out of the factory. Since these are primarily linen, the result of this type of packing is that they were so wrinkled I nearly sent them straight back! I tried them on anyway and since they fit me well, I decided to keep them, but I hope that most of the wrinkles come out in the wash, otherwise I'll have to haul out the iron which I haven't had to do in ages. I don't wear shorts all that often, but since these were a linen blend and every summer seems to be getting hotter, I thought these would be comfortable to wear on those 90+ degree days. Linen is comfortable and breathable and cotton does a good job of wicking away moisture, so it's the perfect blend for the hottest and stickiest days of summer. They aren't too short, which is a plus. I did need to snip a lot of loose strings off of these, so these could have a nicer finish, but for less than $20/pair, I'm not too fussed about it. I think these will wash up well and will look a lot better once ironed, but hopefully, I'll only have to iron them once to get them into the right shape. If they need to be ironed every time they're washed, they'll probably be relegated to the back of my closet where my least favorite clothes go to die, because who has time to iron??!!

True To Size
These shorts fit true to size and are so comfortable. They have a drawstring waist, so you can adjust them for the best fit and wide legs. They are 55% linen and 45% cotton so they keep you feeling cool. The classic colors go with nearly any other colors or designs, making them stretch your wardrobe potential and saving you money. They were extremely wrinkled upon arrival, so I used my fabric steamer, and within 5 min they looked perfect. I love these shorts and wear them all the time!
