Artistic Context: The Impressionist Movement and Morisot's Role

Understanding Impressionism: A Break from Tradition

Impressionism emerged in the late 19th century as a revolutionary art movement. Artists sought to capture fleeting moments and the effects of light, moving away from the rigid rules of academic painting. This shift allowed for more personal expression and a focus on everyday life, which became a hallmark of the Impressionist style.

Berthe Morisot: A Pioneering Female Artist

Berthe Morisot stands out as one of the few prominent female figures in the Impressionist movement. Born in 1841, she broke barriers in a male-dominated art world. Morisot's unique perspective as a woman allowed her to explore themes of domesticity and femininity, making her work both relatable and groundbreaking.

Influences on Morisot's Work: Family, Nature, and Society

Morisot drew inspiration from her family, particularly her sister Edma, and the natural world around her. She often painted scenes of women and children, reflecting the societal roles of her time. Her close ties to fellow Impressionists, including Édouard Manet and Claude Monet, also shaped her artistic vision, fostering a collaborative spirit that enriched her work.

The close cropping of the figure creates a sense of intimacy, making the viewer feel as if they are sharing a private moment. This arrangement emphasizes the girl's vulnerability and the peacefulness of her repose.

Symbolism of Rest: The Importance of Leisure in Childhood

The act of lying down symbolizes rest and leisure, essential aspects of childhood. Morisot highlights the importance of play and relaxation in a child's life. This focus on leisure reflects a broader societal shift towards valuing the well-being of children during the late 19th century.

I am stunned
Color: Black, Size: Queen(20x30)
I had no idea what to expect from these. But for as cheap as they were I was willing to just write it off of they weren't that good. I had already picked up a new memory foam pillow to replace my previous memory foam pillow that didn't do well with dissipating heat. This new pillow was fine by itself, but when I put my pillowcase on it, the properties that made it cooling were negated. I'd get a bit of sweat on the side of my head or my neck where it was against the pillow all night. The pillow was supposed to be a cool one, but the pillowcase was not. So I grabbed this set. Smooth, no loose threads anywhere, stitching and seams are all spot on. And it's smooth to the touch. Got it on the pillow, and as soon as I laid my head down on it, I could tell immediately that this was going to be a different result that my other one. Not nearly as warm even after laying on it for a while. No heat buildup, no bits of moisture on the skin after being on it all night. This definitely works well, especially with my cool sleep pillow. Now I can have a far more comfortable nights sleep. For the price, it's a steal. I have no idea what longevity will be, but with two of them, I'm sure I'll get more than my money's worth.
