Lucien Lelong 11 October 1889 – 11 May 1958) was a French couturier who was prominent from the 1920s to the 1940s.

Career

Born in Paris as the son of Arthur Lelong, the owner of a textile shop, he trained at the Hautes Etudes de Commerciales in Paris and opened his fashion house in the early 1910s. The first Lelong designs were featured in Vogue magazine in 1913. Poor health caused the end of his career; Lelong retired from couture on August, 1948, only continued his perfume business.

Lelong did not actually create the garments that bore his label. "He did not design himself, but worked through his designers," wrote Christian Dior, who was a member of the Lelong team from 1941 until 1946, during which time he created the collections in collaboration with Pierre Balmain. "Nevertheless," Dior continued, "in the course of his career as couturier his collections retained a style which was really his own and greatly resembled him." Other designers who worked for Lelong included Nadine Robinson and Hubert de Givenchy.

Clientele

Among Lelong's clients were Marie Duhamel, Nora Barnacle wife of James Joyce, Jeanne Ternisien (wife of the banker Georges Nelze), the Duchess de la Rochefoucauld, Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Colette, and Rose Kennedy.

Marriages

Lelong was married three times. His wives were:

Anne-Marie Audoy (1899-1935), whom he married in 1919 and divorced in 1927. They had one daughter, Nicole (born 1920), who became the directrice of her father's fashion house in 1947; she was also the namesake of his 1938 lipstick introduction, Nicole Pink. Anne-Marie Lelong, who returned to her maiden name after the Lelongs' divorce, married, in 1930, Baron Bertrand Clauzel.

Princess Natalie Paley (1905–1981), who had worked as a saleswoman in the Lelong perfume department, became one of its fashion models, and also worked as a movie actress. They married on 10 August 1927 and divorced in 1937. She was a daughter of Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich of Russia and his morganatic wife, Olga Karnovich and married, in 1937, John Chapman Wilson.

Sanda Annette Dancovici (1919-2001), an actress, whom he married in 1954; she was the daughter of Mircea Danovici. After Lelong's death she married, in 1959, French journalist Maurice Goudeket, the widower of Colette.

Death

Lelong died of a stroke in Anglet, France.

Quality has gone way down from previous order
My first order was good but this last order had very little scent and had solid bits settled to one side and not distributed throughout the bar. I’m not sure if I want to continue buying this and I’m also concerned like everyone else that there’s no factual ingredient list.

Smells wonderful, but lacking a full ingredients list.
I have sensitivities in my household, and I've come to prefer products that have a full and transparent ingredients list. This soap does not offer one, only just the key ingredients featured on the outer packaging. Since I myself and some family members have to avoid certain ingredients in foods, drinks, and body products, transparency of ingredients means a lot to me. This soap has a delightful, soft, earthy scent that's clean and gentle, and not overwhelming. Don't let the patchouli throw you off- it doesn't smell like petrichor (wet dirt), it smells more of vanilla with powdery, earthy notes. It reminds me of the bags of vanilla flavored tobacco that my grandfather used to have around, and the scent is light, but long lasting on the skin. The soap bars are very soft, and oily to the touch when dry. I don't even need wet skin to get a lathering layer of this soap- I can rub it dry on my hands to get enough. I feel that if this bar were to exposed to water more frequently, it would quickly melt. The soap cleaves my skin feeling very fresh and clean, and isn't drying. I still prefer to use moisturizers, but my skin is dry in general. This soap does seem to help calm irritated skin and has not caused any irritation itself. I really like this soap, but I prefer to have full transparency of ingredients in my body products. Best itchy soap.
This is has done more for my itching than about anything else. I was skeptical at first because "what works on both eczema and psoriasis?" But this is very effective. The instructions say "let dry out on skin for intensive treatment". I would NEVER let any ordinary soap do that. But this treatment truly works. It is excellent quality smells nice but scent is subtle and hypoallergenic. It is very emollient. Fair warning: you need to let it sit on your skin for a bit before you rinse it off. It kinda has to soak in before it rinses clean. And that's the other thing: you feel clean after using it instead of having gunky residue. If you have humid summer skin rash it even helps with that itch. It's very protective of your skin. If you want it to fit in a portable soap dish it fits a standard container if you cut it in half. It even does that well!
