Onkyo TX-8470 Hi-Fi Network Stereo Receiver at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The TX-8470 is a Hi-Fi network stereo receiver from Onkyo (Osaka, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Built specifically for music lovers who want two-channel audiophile performance alongside modern home entertainment connectivity, it delivers 110 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.08% THD, 2-ch driven) through a high-current Class G amplifier with a low negative feedback design. At the heart of the signal chain sits an AKM AK4452 Premium 32-bit / 768 kHz stereo DAC for hi-res audio decoding, paired with a dedicated isolated MM/MC phono board with discrete op amp circuitry for turntable users. The TX-8470 provides four HDMI inputs and one HDMI ARC output all supporting 8K at 40 Gbps, Roon Ready certification, AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, DTS Play-Fi, and Works with Sonos, alongside Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Deezer, Amazon Music HD, and TuneIn.

Class G Amplification and Audiophile Signal Path

The TX-8470 employs a Class G amplification topology, which uses two voltage rails that the amplifier switches between based on signal demand, delivering the organic warmth and detail of Class A operation at lower levels while switching to a higher rail for peaks. This architecture provides greater efficiency and lower heat generation compared to Class AB designs without sacrificing the naturalness or dynamic swing that audiophiles expect. The amplifier is rated at 110 W per channel into 8 ohms with 0.08% THD and 140 W per channel into 4 ohms, supported by a custom transformer and low-impedance audio-grade capacitors throughout the power supply. Gold-plated speaker terminals and gold-plated RCA inputs eliminate oxidation-related signal degradation for stable, low-resistance connections. A/B speaker switching supports two sets of speakers, allowing easy comparison between speaker pairs or simultaneous playback to two rooms. The low negative feedback (NFB) design philosophy prioritises transparency and musical naturalness over measured distortion reduction, resulting in a more open and dynamic presentation.

AKM Premium DAC, Phono Stage, and Hi-Res Audio

All digital sources pass through an AKM AK4452 Premium 32-bit / 768 kHz stereo DAC, an eight-channel chip deployed exclusively for the two main channels to maximise left/right separation and signal-to-noise ratio. This DAC is rated among the industry's lowest-distortion converters and supports native hi-res audio decoding up to PCM 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz (DSD256) from USB storage or a networked media server. High-resolution FLAC, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF files up to 24-bit/192 kHz are supported via network streaming. The dedicated MM/MC phono board uses a patented discrete op amp circuit on a physically isolated board, preventing ground loops and electromagnetic interference from reaching the delicate phono signal before amplification. Switchable MM/MC input sensitivity allows the TX-8470 to work with both standard moving magnet cartridges and the low-output moving coil cartridges preferred by serious vinyl enthusiasts.

HDMI 8K Connectivity and Gaming Features

The TX-8470 brings a level of video connectivity rarely found in a stereo receiver: four HDMI inputs and one HDMI ARC output, all supporting 8K video at 40 Gbps with HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, and BT.2020 wide colour gamut. HDMI ARC on the output simplifies TV connection to a single cable that simultaneously carries video to the display and audio back to the receiver from TV apps. HDMI 2.1 features including VRR, ALLM, and QFT are supported, reducing lag and frame tearing for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X gaming through a stereo system. This makes the TX-8470 a genuine all-in-one hub for music, movies, and gaming without requiring a separate video switch or AV receiver. The front panel HDMI input provides quick access for portable devices and gaming controllers.

Roon Ready, Streaming, and Smart Home Integration

The TX-8470 carries Roon Ready certification, the highest level of Roon integration, enabling bit-perfect lossless playback from a Roon Core server with full metadata display and transport control. AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, DTS Play-Fi, and Works with Sonos with Volume Pass-Through cover every major wireless multiroom streaming ecosystem, while Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Deezer, Amazon Music HD, and TuneIn are built in as native services. Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and Ethernet provide wired and wireless network access. Bidirectional Bluetooth supports incoming audio from smartphones and tablets alongside wireless headphone transmission with aptX HD for 24-bit lossless listening on the go. Voice control integrates with Google Assistant, Apple Siri, and Amazon Alexa via compatible third-party smart home devices. The Onkyo Controller app provides full input switching, tone control, and streaming management from a smartphone or tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Onkyo TX-8470?

The Onkyo TX-8470 is a Hi-Fi network stereo receiver from Onkyo's current lineup, delivering 110 W per channel (8 ohms) through a Class G amplifier, an AKM AK4452 32-bit/768 kHz premium DAC, a dedicated isolated MM/MC phono stage for turntables, four HDMI inputs and one HDMI ARC output all supporting 8K at 40 Gbps, and Roon Ready certification alongside a full wireless streaming suite. It is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada.

How does the Onkyo TX-8470 compare to the Cambridge Audio CXR200 or Yamaha R-N2000A?

The TX-8470 distinguishes itself from the Cambridge Audio CXR200 and Yamaha R-N2000A in several meaningful ways. Its four HDMI inputs with 8K support and HDMI ARC output give it a connectivity profile that neither the CXR200 nor the R-N2000A can match in the stereo receiver category, making it uniquely suited for homes where the stereo receiver also serves as the video hub for a TV. Roon Ready certification at its price point is rare in stereo receivers, and the isolated MM/MC phono board with switchable cartridge sensitivity serves vinyl enthusiasts better than the fixed MM stages found in many competitors. The Class G amplifier topology also offers a different acoustic character to the Class AB designs used in the Yamaha and Cambridge alternatives.

Can the Onkyo TX-8470 connect to a turntable directly?

Yes, the TX-8470 includes a dedicated MM/MC phono input on a physically isolated board with discrete op amp circuitry, allowing direct connection from any moving magnet or moving coil turntable without a separate phono preamplifier. The MM/MC input is selectable to match either a standard moving magnet cartridge or a low-output moving coil cartridge, making it compatible with a wide range of turntables from entry-level to high-end audiophile models.

What is Class G amplification and how does it benefit audio performance?

Class G amplification uses two power supply voltage rails, switching between a lower rail for quiet and moderate signal levels and a higher rail for dynamic peaks. This approach combines the efficiency and cool running of Class D designs with the analogue warmth and transparency closer to Class A operation, since the amplifier spends most of its time in the lower-voltage, lower-distortion region. The TX-8470's low negative feedback design further enhances musical naturalness by minimising the phase errors and grain that high-feedback amplifiers can introduce, resulting in a more open, dynamic, and engaging presentation for long-duration listening.

Is the Onkyo TX-8470 compatible with a Sonos multiroom system?

Yes, the TX-8470 is Works with Sonos certified with Volume Pass-Through, allowing it to join an existing Sonos wireless multiroom network via a Sonos Port (sold separately). Once connected, the receiver can be controlled from the Sonos app alongside other Sonos devices, with volume commands passed directly to the TX-8470. AirPlay 2 and DTS Play-Fi provide additional multiroom audio options for Apple and Android ecosystems.

What hi-res audio formats does the TX-8470 support?

The TX-8470 supports PCM audio up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz (DSD256 / DSDIFF/DSF format) via USB storage devices or a networked media server. Standard hi-res formats including 24-bit/192 kHz FLAC, ALAC, WAV, and AIFF are supported via both network streaming and USB playback. The AKM AK4452 DAC handles all decoding with low-distortion conversion that preserves the dynamic nuance of high-resolution recordings.

Where can I buy the Onkyo TX-8470 in Toronto or Canada?

Great for classroom organization

These shelves are perfect for organizing my classroom library. The cubes are a little smaller than I expected, so they don’t fit larger picture books well. I was able to make it work by using bins inside the cubes and slanting the bigger books, but just know it’s best for regular-sized books. Since they’re a bit shorter, I stacked two together and it gave me the height I needed. Overall, they look great, were easy to set up, and hold a lot of books in an organized way. My students can easily find what they need, and I really like the clean, simple style.

I needed a cheap little bookshelf for this small play area. The shelf was relatively easy to assemble by myself, and it's sturdy enough to stand on carpeted flooring. I didn't bother installing the safety wall mount because I live in a rental and I can't screw things into the walls. The bookshelf is too small for standard storage cubes, so I purchased a couple of 9-inch cubes from the Dollar Tree and they fit just fine. I might rearrange the contents later.

Okay small bookshelf
Color: White, Size: 9.3 D x 19.5 W x 41.8 H in
Glad I got this on a sale for our nursery. I don’t expect it to be that durable but it will be great for kid books and toys. Instructions are pictures only and a little overwhelming with all the lines, basically alternate shelves on either side from the middle and you’ll be fine and make sure your painted edges all face the same way. Quality isn’t the best as it split when screwing in and it wasn’t even in all the way, we were being careful but we flipped that part out of sight. The back is a flimsy board you nail in, wish it was another piece of particle board like the shelves to add stability. At least it has an anti tip strap but I’d get a better quality anti tip strap anyways. Upon assembly we were missing screws. Didn’t think we would need to count so many to make sure but I didn’t want to repack and return, luckily we have extra screws around the house. Pros: good for kids room, came with anti tip strap, came with screw stickers to cover, simple build Cons: could be better quality for (full) price, back flimsy board, missing screws, instructions could be better, not enough screw stickers to cover even just the outside… Overall an okay small bookshelf.
