Retro Platinum Encrusted Squirrel Pendant with 14K White Gold Chain

This adorable diamond encrusted platinum squirrel has approximately 85 single cut diamonds that vary in size from 1 mm to 2 mm. Upon first glance, the pendant appears to have an abstract scrolling foliate shape, but the outline of a detailed squirrel quickly takes form. The squirrel has incredible line work, with a sculpted tail that is lyrical and loops around to the squirrel’s hind legs, with negative space that creates the shape of the body. The little squirrel appears to be eating, with his tiny mouth open mid-bite and his hand up to his mouth for a snack. A red ruby cabochon adds a pop of color for the eye. This is some of the most meticulous line work we’ve seen, with the delineated lines in the platinum and elegant bead work around the diamonds that create the details of the squirrel. The pendant connects to a 14k white gold chain. 

The pendant contains approximately 85 natural single cut diamonds, for a TCW of approximately 3/4 of a carat. The diamonds are near colorless, bright and lively, and range from 1 - 2 mm in size. 

The pendant measures 1” x 7/8”, and is on a 16 1/2” chain. The piece weighs 3.8 grams. The pendant is unmarked and acid tests as platinum; the chain is marked as 14k gold and Italy. We believe the pendant used to be a pin and a chain was added at some point. Circa the 1940’s.
