During the intense fighting at Guadalcanal and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, Hornet was heavily damaged by relentless Japanese air attacks. Despite desperate efforts to save her, she was ultimately abandoned and later sunk by Japanese destroyers, marking the last US fleet carrier lost to enemy action. Of the three Yorktown-class carriers, only USS Enterprise survived the war, while USS Yorktown was lost at Midway.
