On a safari in East Africa I discovered a beautiful Aloe Vera Vulgaris plant growing just outside of my tent. Even more exciting than the plant was that each morning I would witness and multitude of bid species coming to drink the plants sweet nectar. A constantly changing parade of color was unfolding right before my eyes. I was inspired to paint these beautiful birds and I chose the Speke’s Weaver and the Marcio Sunbird for their bright and contrasting colors. Finding inspiration from the approach of John James Audubon, I placed the focus on the birds and allowed the background to remain simple and painterly. While painting I worked on both simultaneously, trying the compositions together and creating the perfect set for collections in Aloe I and Aloe II.
