"Nothing I've read has cut to the heart of the '00s like Y2K." -- Bustle

Perfect for fans of Jia Tolentino and Chuck Klosterman, Y2K is a delightfully nostalgic and bitingly told exploration of pop culture history about how the early 2000s forever changed us and the world we live in.

THE EARLY 2000s conjures images of inflatable furniture, flip phones, and low-rise jeans. It was a new millennium and the future looked bright, promising prosperity for all thanks to the dot-com bubble. The internet had arrived, and technology was shiny and fun. For many, it felt like the end of history: no more wars, racism, or sexism. But then history kept happening. Twenty-five years after the ball dropped on December 31st, 1999, we are still living in the shadows of the Y2K Era.

In this landmark essay collection, Y2K, one of our most brilliant young critics Colette Shade offers a darkly funny meditation on everything from celebrity culture to the political economy of the period. By close reading Y2K artifacts like the Hummer H2, Smash Mouth's "All Star," body glitter, AOL chatrooms, Total Request Live, and early internet porn, Shade produces an affectionate yet searing critique of a decade that started with a boom and ended with the housing crisis.

Blending sharp social commentary with a millennial memoir voice, Colette unpacks how hearing Ludacris's hit song "What's Your Fantasy" shaped a generation's sexual awakening; in another she interrogates how her eating disorder developed as rail-thin models from the collapsed USSR flooded the pages of Vogue; in another she reveals how the McMansion became an ominous symbol of the housing collapse.

Perfect for fans of Jia Tolentino and Chuck Klosterman, Y2K is the first book to fully reckon with the mixed legacy of the Y2K Era--a perfectly timed work of cultural history that holds a startling mirror to our past, present, and future.

This brilliant and darkly funny collection explores the moments that defined a generation:

  • A Boom and a Bust: From the techno-optimism of the dot-com bubble to the McMansions that foretold the housing crash, Shade connects the political economy of the era to its cultural artifacts.
  • The Rise of the Internet: A deep dive into the days of AOL chatrooms, dial-up modems, and early internet porn, exploring how the web's arrival reshaped everything from our social lives to our self-perception.
  • Pop Culture Time Capsule: Searing and affectionate critiques of the decade's most memorable artifacts, from Smash Mouth's "All Star" and Ludacris's sexual awakenings to body glitter and the Hummer H2.
  • A Personal Reckoning: A fiercely honest account of coming of age in the Y2K era, linking the author's own eating disorder to the impossible beauty standards set by fashion magazines and the collapse of the USSR.

Its just junk.. Quit working within 3 months of purchase. Took it apart and nothing looked bad, put in a new battery and still nothing. I didn't expect much considering the price, but you're practically throwing money in the trash buying this. Costumer service is non-existent if you're looking for a replacement. Amazon will always give money back with a returned item.

Most satisfying purchase in years!
Color: Silver
I bought this watch as part of the Black Thursday Deals. I didn't expect much frankly, but I've been mightily impressed by its quality and utility. As a timepiece and as an accessory, this is a great buy. The face is easy to read, the second-hand sweeps exactly on the second marks (a rarity these days in even fairly expensive watches) and it keeps good time (one second per day fast so far). The day/date are a good size and pretty easy to set using the industry standard crown-pull method. The brushed aluminum case appears durable and yet it's comfortable. The strap is thin but of good quality; it has 13 holes and will fit a wide variety of wrist sizes. Overall, I'm totally satisfied and have no hesitation in highly recommending this outstanding watch.

Solid, if basic, cheap watch.
Color: Black
This is a solid, if basic, quartz watch. It keeps good time, and the NATO strap is comfortable. Though some have had complaints about it's waterproof rating, I've had no issues with that. But... The lume (glow-in-the-dark) is pretty weak and doesn't last long. I expected that, but it actually bothers me more than I thought it would. The date window is small and hard to read; which is fine because a month after I got it, it lost the ability to change the date (April has 30 days, but I can't skip over the 31st to the 1st) If I cared about the date function, that would be a deal breaker.

What time is it? Time to buy this watch!
Color: Blue
This is a great watch at an unbelievable price. You get quality materials, durable construction, reliability and style, all for a great price. I wear this watch more than my others, and I have quite a few, but this one has that "it" factor. I get a lot of compliments on it and love the aesthetic. It keeps time well and has a pretty long battery life. The fit is also great too since it very adjustable.

Good value
Color: Black
Surprisingly good watch at this price. Compatible with common 20mm NATO straps. Have worn mine extensively despite owning more expensive field watches. Got the black model and switched to a Bond NATO strap. Good legibility, light but not cheap feeling. Lots of great affordable field watches out there from Timex, Militado, Addiesdive, etc, but at the sub $20 price I think this is one of the best values.
