DALI PHANTOM K-80 In-Ceiling Speaker at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The PHANTOM K-80 is a premium 8-inch in-ceiling loudspeaker from DALI (Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries, Allerød, Denmark), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Building on the foundations of the well-established PHANTOM E-series, the K-80 represents a significant step forward with DALI's signature wood fibre cone, making it the first DALI in-ceiling speaker to use this driver technology. It combines an off-axis 8-inch woofer with a wishbone-mounted, tiltable 28mm soft dome tweeter, two onboard voicing switches, and a PTC driver protection circuit in a 261 mm cutout design that shares the same installation dimensions as the PHANTOM E-series. With a frequency range of 48 Hz to 25,000 Hz, a sensitivity of 87 dB, and a maximum SPL of 107 dB, the PHANTOM K-80 is suited to stereo listening, home cinema surround and height channels, and whole-home distributed audio in rooms of any size.

Wood Fibre Cone and Off-Axis Woofer: Hi-Fi Engineering for In-Ceiling Installation

The PHANTOM K-80's 8-inch woofer uses DALI's signature wood fibre cone, a material shared with DALI's floorstanding and standmount hi-fi speaker ranges and appearing in an in-ceiling speaker for the first time with the K-series. The wood fibre material adds stiffness to the cone to control unwanted resonance while also providing non-uniform surface break-up characteristics that reduce coloration and distortion in the upper midrange, resulting in a cleaner, more natural reproduction of vocals and acoustic instruments. The woofer is mounted slightly off-axis within the ceiling chassis, which serves two acoustic purposes. First, the off-axis position reduces even-order coloration that arises when a symmetrically mounted driver fires directly perpendicular to its baffle, producing a more even frequency response. Second, it allows the 28mm tweeter to be positioned physically closer to the woofer on the baffle, which improves timing and phase coherence at the 3,300 Hz crossover point. The off-axis tilt also means the woofer is inherently aimed slightly toward the listening position rather than directly at the ceiling, improving on-axis response at the seat. The DALI low-loss magnet and rubber surround system provides long linear excursion for deep, controlled bass without compression or dynamic limiting at high output levels, making the K-80 capable of filling large living rooms from a single pair of ceiling-mounted speakers.

Wishbone Tweeter, Voicing Switches, and PTC Protection: Installer and Listener Control

The PHANTOM K-80's 28mm soft dome tweeter is mounted in a solid aluminium wishbone bracket that can be tilted toward the listening position independently of the woofer, allowing high-frequency response to be optimised at the seat without changing the woofer alignment. The oversized 28mm diameter, compared to the 25mm tweeters typically found in competing in-ceiling speakers, lowers the tweeter's effective lower frequency limit and produces a more seamless handover from the woofer at 3,300 Hz with fewer dips in the critical midrange region. Tuned mass dampers on the tweeter bracket isolate the dome from vibrations transmitted through the enclosure structure, reducing distortion that would otherwise affect high-frequency clarity. Two voicing switches on the crossover board allow further customisation without tools. The Focus/Distribute switch adjusts tweeter dispersion for listening positions within 25 degrees of the speaker axis (Focus) versus positions beyond 25 degrees where wider coverage is required (Distribute). The Normal/HF+ switch adds 3 dB to the high-frequency output for installations where speakers are mounted far apart and high-frequency energy must travel a greater distance to reach the listening position. A PTC (Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient) protection circuit acts as a thermal fuse that reduces current to the drivers before overheating can cause permanent damage, a practical necessity in whole-home audio installations where the volume may be set remotely without awareness of how close the speakers are being driven to their limits.

Key Features

  • 8-Inch Wood Fibre Cone Woofer: DALI's signature wood fibre cone technology, used here in a DALI in-ceiling speaker for the first time, provides stiffness, non-uniform surface break-up, and natural coloration control for high-resolution midrange and precise, controlled bass.
  • Off-Axis Woofer Mounting: The woofer is positioned slightly off-axis to reduce coloration, improve frequency response evenness, allow closer tweeter placement for better timing and phase, and direct sound slightly toward the listening position.
  • Wishbone-Mounted Tiltable 28mm Tweeter: A solid aluminium wishbone bracket with tuned mass dampers allows the oversized soft dome tweeter to be tilted toward the listening position for optimised high-frequency delivery at the seat.
  • Focus/Distribute Switch: Adjusts tweeter dispersion between a focused mode for listening positions within 25 degrees of the speaker axis and a wider distribute mode for off-axis listening positions beyond 25 degrees.
  • Normal/HF+ Switch: Adds 3 dB of high-frequency output for installations with large speaker separation distances, where additional HF energy is needed to maintain clarity and presence at the listening position.
  • PTC Driver Protection: A Polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient thermal protection circuit prevents driver damage from sustained high-volume operation, an important safety feature for whole-home audio installations operated remotely.
  • Audiophile-Grade Crossover Components: All crossover components are individually selected for audiophile quality, with wiring secured to eliminate rattling and spring-loaded terminals placed directly on the crossover board for the shortest possible signal path.
  • Compatible Backbox and Back-Can Accessories: An optional backbox provides a controlled rear acoustic environment for consistent bass definition across varying ceiling cavity sizes. The PHANTOM K-80-specific back-can retrofits through the same 261 mm cutout for installations where a backbox cannot be installed, tuned for punchier upper bass in reverberant environments such as bathrooms and hallways. The K-80 woofer cone is also surface-treated for moisture resistance in damp installations.
  • E-Series Compatible Dimensions: Uses the same 261 mm cutout as the PHANTOM E-series, allowing the K-80 to be installed as an upgrade in existing E-series cutouts without additional ceiling work.
  • 111 mm Mounting Depth: A compact 111 mm mounting depth fits most standard ceiling constructions, with ceiling/wall thickness compatibility of 5 to 52 mm via the dogleg clamp system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DALI PHANTOM K-80?

The DALI PHANTOM K-80 is a premium 8-inch in-ceiling loudspeaker from Danish Audiophile Loudspeaker Industries (DALI), Allerød, Denmark. It is the flagship of the PHANTOM K-series and the first DALI in-ceiling speaker to use the company's signature wood fibre cone driver technology. It features an off-axis 8-inch woofer, a wishbone-mounted tiltable 28mm soft dome tweeter, two onboard voicing switches (Focus/Distribute and Normal/HF+), and a PTC driver protection circuit, with a frequency range of 48 Hz to 25,000 Hz, a sensitivity of 87 dB, and a maximum SPL of 107 dB from a 261 mm cutout diameter and 111 mm mounting depth.

How does the DALI PHANTOM K-80 compare to the KEF Ci200RR-THX and Bowers and Wilkins CCM8.5 D3 in-ceiling speakers?

The DALI PHANTOM K-80, KEF Ci200RR-THX, and Bowers and Wilkins CCM8.5 D3 are all premium 8-inch in-ceiling speakers designed for high-performance home cinema and whole-home audio applications. The KEF Ci200RR-THX uses a coincident Uni-Q driver for point-source imaging and carries THX Ultra2 certification. The Bowers and Wilkins CCM8.5 D3 uses a Continuum cone mid/bass driver with a separate dome tweeter in a fixed circular configuration. The DALI PHANTOM K-80 differentiates itself through its off-axis woofer mounting, which improves frequency response evenness and timing, and its two onboard voicing switches for installer-adjustable sound customisation without external equalisation. The PHANTOM K-80 also uses the same 261 mm cutout as the PHANTOM E-series, making it a straightforward upgrade path for existing DALI E-series installations without ceiling modification.

What do the voicing switches on the DALI PHANTOM K-80 do?

The DALI PHANTOM K-80 has two independent voicing switches that allow installers to fine-tune the speaker's performance for specific room conditions and listening positions. The Focus/Distribute switch adjusts tweeter high-frequency dispersion. In Focus mode, the tweeter concentrates its output for listening positions within approximately 25 degrees of the speaker axis, providing the best possible on-axis performance at the primary seat. In Distribute mode, the tweeter disperses high frequencies more broadly for rooms where the listening position is further off-axis or where multiple listeners are spread across the room. The Normal/HF+ switch adds 3 dB of high-frequency output in the HF+ position, which compensates for high-frequency energy loss over distance when speakers are mounted far apart in large rooms or open-plan spaces.

Can the DALI PHANTOM K-80 be installed in a bathroom or damp environment?

Yes, with the optional PHANTOM K-80 back-can accessory, the K-80 can be installed in bathrooms and other damp environments. The woofer cone is surface-treated for moisture resistance as a standard specification. The back-can, designed to retrofit through the same 261 mm cutout as the speaker itself, provides physical protection from moisture and humidity above the ceiling while also tuning the rear acoustic environment for punchier upper bass, which DALI notes is particularly beneficial in bathrooms and hallways where the acoustic environment tends to be more reverberant than typical living spaces. The PTC thermal protection circuit also provides an additional layer of driver safety in bathroom installations where ambient temperature and humidity can affect amplifier behaviour.

Does the DALI PHANTOM K-80 use the same cutout as the PHANTOM E-series?

Yes, the DALI PHANTOM K-80 uses the same 261 mm cutout diameter as the PHANTOM E-series speakers. This makes the K-80 a direct upgrade option for any existing PHANTOM E-series installation without requiring new ceiling cutouts or modification of the existing opening. The K-80 also shares grille compatibility with the PHANTOM E-series, so the same square optional grille accessories are interchangeable between both series. For installers and homeowners looking to upgrade an existing PHANTOM E-series system to the improved wood fibre cone and adjustable tweeter technology of the K-series, the identical cutout dimension is a significant practical advantage.

Where can I buy the DALI PHANTOM K-80 in Toronto or Canada?

The DALI PHANTOM K-80 is available in Toronto and across Canada at Vinyl Sound, an authorised DALI dealer. Vinyl Sound can advise on installation requirements, backbox and back-can accessories, amplifier selection, and integration with other PHANTOM series speakers for complete home cinema or distributed audio systems. Purchasing from an authorised dealer ensures full DALI manufacturer warranty coverage (60 months) and professional installation guidance throughout Canada.

What amplifier works best with the DALI PHANTOM K-80?

DALI recommends amplifier power of 50 to 200 watts per channel for the PHANTOM K-80 at its 6-ohm nominal impedance. Its 87 dB sensitivity makes it easy to drive from a wide range of amplifiers, including quality AV receivers from Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, and Anthem as well as dedicated multichannel power amplifiers from Rotel, Cambridge Audio, and similar brands. For whole-home distributed audio systems, the PHANTOM CI AMP-4750 DSP provides four channels of high-power Class-D amplification with dedicated DSP presets for PHANTOM series speakers, and can be cascaded for larger multi-zone or multi-channel configurations. Vinyl Sound can recommend the appropriate amplifier solution for any PHANTOM K-80 installation.

Is the DALI PHANTOM K-80 suitable for Dolby Atmos height channels?

Yes, the DALI PHANTOM K-80 is well suited for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X overhead height channel applications in ceiling positions. Its 8-inch woofer delivers more bass output than the 6.5-inch PHANTOM K-60, making it a better choice for height channels in larger home cinema rooms where the greater distance from the listening position would otherwise reduce perceived output and bass weight. The tiltable tweeter and Focus/Distribute voicing switch allow the speaker to be aimed and tuned for the specific height channel listening geometry, and its performance can be matched with other PHANTOM K-series or M-series speakers in the LCR and surround positions for tonal consistency across all channels.

Excellent Quality, Great Value, Great Look. Highly Recommend
Very well-made, there are some minor imperfections in the cuff sewing that aren't really noticeable when on. Liner is quality, color is spot on, and it fits true to size. If you're in the market for a toddler blazer and pants, you can't go wrong with this one in terms of quality, price, and the cut is perfect for a very polished look. There were a few loose strings to be clipped, but everything was correctly sewn and well. None of them affected the seam strength. The pants have a button and elastic on the waistband to make adjusting the waist size easier.

Great boys slim fit suit for weddings, church, or special events
Color: Medium Grey, Size: 12
Great kids suit. Comes with a jacket, pants, and tie. Does not have a shirt. Fits as expected. Classic cut on the lapels. Great quality materials. Well made pants and jacket. The color is consistent without any fade or dark spots that can happen with lower quality fabrics. Looks great on. My son loves it. Says it is not restrictive, he can move easily in it. Highly recommend for church, special events, weddings, etc.

Nice high-quality, light weight suit for a tween!
Color: Navy Blue, Size: 10
This is such an attractive suit for a tween boy! My son loves dressing up, and this is his new favorite suit. He really likes the double-breasted style and the light weight of the fabric so that it isn't too hot. The tie that came with it gives major Harry Potter vibes which we weren't expecting, but he has lots of other ties that he also enjoys pairing with it. The size seems right, and it fits him well. He says it is very comfortable. I'm happy with the quality and the navy color.

Stylish and great value!
Color: Medium Grey, Size: 14
This grey suit was a great find for a school ceremony and will definitely be used again. The neutral color makes it easy to pair with different shirts and ties, and it has a modern, clean-cut look. The jacket and pants fit nicely after a quick press, and the quality was better than I expected for the price. It lost a star only because the waist on the pants needed a slight adjustment, but overall, we’re very happy with it!

Runs big, and fabric may not be same color as picture
Color: Medium Grey, Size: 16, Color: Medium Grey, Size: 16
This suit was a good find for us, as we usually dress up for church, and my 13 yo son often wears suits. He normally wears a size 16, so that’s what we ordered, and in dark charcoal gray. The suit we got was a light, heathered gray that didn’t look much like the one in the picture. It was very wrinkly and thin, and a little scratchy. Also, the sleeves were way too long and the torso cut of the jacket was pretty wide. The pants were very large in the waist, but fit him decently in the length (he’s 5’4” and weighs 90 lbs). Overall the suit looked like it was drowning him, so I would order a size down unless you have a larger child/teen. Because of the ill fit, I haven’t had the chance to see what the suit looks like on him as it’s supposed to, but I guess I’ll return it or wait a year or two until he fills it out a bit more. Not overly impressed with the quality, so I’m not sure I’d pay $55 for this one again.
