INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to the Locate & Identify Automotive Electrical Systems & Components course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in locating and identifying key automotive electrical systems and components accurately and safely, using appropriate technical information, correct terminology and basic electrical theory.

Locating and identifying automotive electrical systems and components involves understanding how electrical power is generated, stored, distributed and controlled within a vehicle or machinery system, and being able to recognise the major systems and their component roles in basic operation. This work requires careful attention to workplace safety procedures because automotive electrical systems can present risks such as short circuits, sparks, heat, battery hazards and moving engine components during checking activities. Accurate identification of systems and components is essential for effective diagnostics and repair work because technicians must be able to confirm what system they are working on, interpret technical information correctly, and describe circuits and components clearly before any testing or disassembly occurs.

The course assessment focuses on your ability to interpret task instructions, make informed decisions about how to locate and identify systems using technical information, and recognise the safety controls required when working around automotive electrical components. You will be required to demonstrate how you identify task requirements from job instructions, including the specific vehicle or machinery to be worked on, obtain and use technical information to support identification of electrical systems, and apply workplace health and safety requirements throughout identification and checking activities.

By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can interpret task requirements, use technical information to locate and identify automotive electrical systems, apply WHS controls and PPE, use tools safely, apply basic electrical theory concepts, and correctly identify key systems such as power supply, ignition, fuel delivery, charging, starting, lighting and body electrical systems, including wiring protection and harness components—confirming your readiness to support accurate electrical system identification in an automotive workplace.

TOPICS COVERED IN THIS ASSESSMENT:

This course assessment is based on the following topics:

1.    Identifying task requirements from task instructions, including the specific vehicle or machinery to be worked on

2.    Obtaining and using technical information to support identification of the electrical system

3.    Applying workplace health and safety requirements when identifying electrical systems and components

4.    Selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE) for automotive electrical system identification tasks

5.    Selecting and using tools and equipment safely when locating electrical systems and components

6.    Following workplace safety procedures during electrical system identification and checking activities

7.    Basic electrical theory: alternating current (AC) and how it relates to vehicle electrical operation

8.    Basic electrical theory: direct current (DC) and how it relates to vehicle electrical operation

9.    Basic electrical theory: Ohm’s law and its practical relevance when checking basic system operation

10. Identifying and locating vehicle electrical power supplies and confirming basic operation

11. Identifying and locating the ignition system and confirming major component function and basic operation

12. Identifying and locating the fuel delivery system and confirming major component function and basic operation

13. Identifying and locating the charging system and starting system and confirming component roles in vehicle operation

14. Identifying and locating lighting and body electrical systems and confirming their relationship to vehicle operation

15. Identifying and locating fuses, circuit breakers, wiring looms and harnesses and using basic automotive electrical terminology to describe them accurately

Cheap Replacement
These are an easy replacement for anyone who owns a BMW m52/m54 engine that has PCV issues. My car was burning about 1 quart every 1,000 miles. The parts are direct fit and install fairly easy. If there is resistance, lube the hole or o-ring up with some grease and it will slide in easier. Took me about 2 hours start to finish. My mechanic recommended that I remove the intake manifold to do the job. I don’t see how you could do it without removing the intake manifold. These parts probably won’t last as long as true BMW parts but on a 20 year old car I don’t see the benefit in using genuine BMW parts. Cheap stuff will suffice; worst case it doesn’t last quite as long.

NOT TOO HARD TO INSTALL...
This CCV kit seems adequate. People say that because the hoses supplied with these kits are more brittle than the genuine BMW parts, these are tough to install... But they're really not. The ends on these hoses SWIVEL and you can sort of eyeball which way you need the fitting to be pointing BEFORE you put them on your manifold... They swivel, but they're tight and it takes a little force to turn them. ALSO, a little dab of silicone gel or a spray of silicone out of the can, into the fittings on these makes a world of difference when clicking them on... For the price, I highly recommend the kit.

Great value
I recently had to replace the starter on my 2001 325i E46 with about 150k miles. While I had the intake off, I figured it would be a good time to replace the CCV because I was unsure if it had ever been done. My old CCV literally fell apart as I removed it, so I'm glad I replaced it. The new parts were a little tough to put together, but overall came together well enough. A lot can be forgiven for the price. I would recommend assembling the system before installing in your vehicle to get a good sense of how it all goes together and to hopefully loosen up the fittings just a tad before installation. 50skid on youtube has a great DIY for doing this job. I only finished this job yesterday, but my car has been running great. I can't yet confirm, but this may have solved my running lean problem.

Cheap plastic parts -- good fit
They are what they are: Cheap plastic parts. They fit, but long-term durability will be a challenge. Probably will buy from FCP Euro going forward (and just did for a fuel line replacement).
