Yakuza films are a genre of their own, both within Japanese cinema and in the broader world of gangster films. Spanning from the 1960s to today, they tell stories of loyalty, betrayal, and broken codes of honor, set against a backdrop that is often masculine, violent, and melancholic. Visually, the genre is unmistakable: sharp black suits, hardened faces, scars, smoke-filled rooms, heavy silences, and sudden bursts of violence.
Tension is almost always present. Dialogue is sparse but loaded with meaning. Honor plays a central role, sometimes pushed to the point of absurdity or tragedy. The characters are rarely heroes, they’re weary, lost, dangerous men heading toward an inevitable end.
Some films are highly stylized, almost poetic (like those by Seijun Suzuki), while others are raw and nearly documentary-like (such as those by Kinji Fukasaku).
