COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Reggio Emilia-Inspired Approaches in Childcare course, where we delve into the transformative philosophy and principles that have revolutionised early childhood education. Rooted in the vibrant town of Reggio Emilia, Italy, this approach is founded on the belief that children are competent, capable, and curious learners who construct knowledge through meaningful experiences and interactions.

Our journey begins with an Introduction to Reggio Emilia Philosophy and Principles, tracing its origins and historical context. We explore the key philosophical foundations of respect, responsibility, and community, which underpin the Reggio Emilia approach. Understanding the Seven Principles of Reggio Emilia guides us towards creating dynamic learning environments that nurture children's innate curiosity and creativity.

Central to this approach is Child-Centred Learning and Constructivism, where children are active participants in their learning journey. We delve into child-led learning experiences, constructivist theory, and hands-on learning that fosters exploration, discovery, and a deeper understanding of concepts.

Community plays a vital role in Early Childhood Education, and we emphasise the Importance of Community in fostering holistic development. We discuss strategies for building strong relationships with families, collaborating with community partners, and creating inclusive and welcoming environments that celebrate diversity.

Encouraging Collaboration and Social Learning is another cornerstone of Reggio Emilia-inspired approaches. We explore the power of group projects, collaborative activities, and peer interaction in developing social skills, communication, and emotional intelligence in children.

Supporting Children's Communication and Self-Expression is at the heart of our approach. We provide avenues for verbal and nonverbal expression, artistic and creative exploration through various media, and empower children to share their ideas, thoughts, and feelings in a supportive environment.

Creating Enriching and Supportive Learning Environments is a fundamental aspect of our course. We delve into designing inviting spaces, incorporating natural elements and materials, and organising learning centres that cater to children's interests and inquiries.

The Role of the Environment as the Third Teacher is a central concept in Reggio Emilia-inspired approaches. We explore how the physical environment can inspire and facilitate exploration, inquiry, and deep learning experiences for children.

Nurturing and Guiding Children as Educators is a collaborative effort between educators and children. We emphasise the importance of facilitating child-led learning, observing and documenting children's interests, and providing guidance and support without imposing adult agendas.

Implementing Project-Based Learning is a dynamic approach we embrace. We discuss planning, organising, and documenting project-based activities that encourage inquiry, critical thinking, and collaboration among children.

Documenting Children's Learning and Progress is essential for reflective practice and informed teaching. We explore documentation techniques, using documentation to inform teaching practices, and involving children in documenting their own learning journey.

Engaging Parents as Partners in Education is crucial for holistic development. We discuss strategies for building collaborative relationships with parents, involving them in children's learning experiences, and effective communication about learning goals and progress.

Collaborative Learning and Professional Development for Educators is key to enhancing teaching practices. We explore collaborative planning and reflection sessions, continuous professional learning opportunities, and networking to share best practices.

Embracing Diversity and Inclusion is inherent in Reggio Emilia-inspired approaches. We celebrate diversity in cultures, languages, and abilities, create inclusive environments, and implement anti-bias curriculum and practices.

Assessing and Evaluating Children's Learning in a Reggio Emilia Context requires authentic assessment methods that align with the approach. We discuss using observations, anecdotal records, and individual growth assessments to evaluate children's progress.

Continuous Improvement and Reflection in Practice are ongoing processes for educators. We emphasise reflective practices, seeking feedback from stakeholders, and iteratively improving teaching practices based on reflection and feedback loops.

By the end of this course, you will have a deep understanding of Reggio Emilia-inspired approaches, equipped with practical strategies, and a renewed passion for nurturing young minds in inclusive, creative, and empowering learning environments.

A bit iffy on these plates
Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count, Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count
These plates are ok, but certainly not the best I've found. On the positive side, they are what I'd consider "Lunch Size" an are somewhat sturdy. They'll hold a sandwich and chips with little effort so, as a plate, they do... plate. Where I am a bit hesitant is in their molding an construction. You can see in my photos that there is significant staining/watermarking on the plates from the manufacturing process. This could be simply from the way the wet pulp was extruded and formed, but it honestly gives me a bit of the ick. Not that it's particularly gross, but it does make me wonder how sanitary the plates are or what binders might be leeching into my food. In my last photo, you can see a comparison to a compostable plate that I really like. The finish is cleaner and the mold included an inner ridge which gives the plate more stability - making it less likely to flex under weight. Both are sugar cane fiber plates and my preferred plate is a few dollars more expensive for a comparable pack, but the clean appearance and extra rigidity make it worth the added spend in my opinion. Ranking these 3-stars might lead some to think they're bad - and to be clear, I don't think they are. They're just adequate. If you're looking to save a few bucks on a compostable plate, these WILL get the job done. I would just shy away from using them with wet or acidic foods since they don't boast the highest quality of manufacture.

Strong Eco Friendly Plates But Not Great For Hot Food
Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count
I picked these up because I wanted something more environmentally friendly than the usual plastic or paper stuff. They are made from bamboo and bagasse, and you get a good amount in the pack for the price. For dry stuff like snacks or sandwiches, they are super sturdy and do not bend at all when you pick them up. However, they do not hold up very well when you put hot or wet food on them. Even though they are supposed to be heavy duty, I noticed they can get a little soft if the food is really steaming. They are still perfect for a quick lunch or a party where you want an easy cleanup, but you might want to double them up if you are serving something heavy and hot. The plates are big, and you get quite a bit, making it a really good value overall.

Heavy duty paper plates
Color: Brown, Size: 10 in - 75 count
These disposable plates are amazing. They're large enough to hold an entire Thanksgiving meal. They're sturdy and strong, and won't buckle even when supporting quite a lot of weight. They don't get soggy even when I deliberately poured water in them. The sides are built up to keep food from falling off the plate. These are everything you'd need in a disposable plate, and they're biodegradable, too! These are ideal for barbeques or outdoor entertaining, or even for everyday use in the kitchen.

Compostable Paper Plates
Color: Brown, Size: 9 in - 75 count
I ordered these because I like using paper plates and wanted to see if the compostable ones were strong enough for regular use. They're sturdier than regular paper plates due to the increased thickness of these. I've put heavy food on them like ribs and sides and they haven't bent under the weight. They feel more like pressed cardboard than paper and hold up through a full meal without getting soft. The brown color is a little utilitarian looking but that doesn't really matter for what they are. I guess I wouldn't use them for a party or something fun like that. They stack neatly and take up about the same space as regular paper plates.
