AudioQuest Black Lab Subwoofer Cable at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The AudioQuest Black Lab is a dedicated subwoofer interconnect from AudioQuest (Irvine, California, USA), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Built around Solid Long-Grain Copper (LGC) conductors, a symmetrical coax geometry, and a Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS), the Black Lab is engineered to deliver clean, accurate low-frequency signal transfer between a preamplifier or AV receiver and a powered subwoofer. Cold-welded, gold-plated RCA plugs complete the connection with a reliable, corrosion-resistant termination.

Solid Long-Grain Copper Conductors and Symmetrical Coax Geometry

The Black Lab uses Solid Long-Grain Copper (LGC) conductors rather than stranded wire, eliminating the strand-interaction distortion that degrades signal integrity in conventional subwoofer cables. Long-Grain Copper is refined to produce fewer grain boundaries along the conductor's length, reducing the distortion and high-frequency noise that accumulates as a signal passes through standard oxygen-free copper. The symmetrical coaxial geometry ensures that the conductor and shield are arranged concentrically for consistent electrical performance along the full cable length, minimizing impedance variation and signal smearing that can blur bass transients and reduce subwoofer integration accuracy.

Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System

Subwoofer cables run long distances in environments with significant RFI and EMI from power amplifiers, switch-mode power supplies, and wireless devices. The Black Lab's Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System addresses this by shielding the signal conductor in a way that prevents captured RFI from modulating the ground reference. Unlike a conventional braid or foil shield that drains noise directly to component ground, AudioQuest's NDS is configured to absorb and dissipate interference before it reaches the ground plane, reducing the low-level noise contamination that conventional shielding introduces into the bass signal.

Key Features

  • Solid Long-Grain Copper (LGC) Conductors: Solid-core LGC conductors eliminate strand interaction and reduce grain-boundary distortion for cleaner, more accurate low-frequency signal transmission.
  • Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation: Low-density foamed PE insulation reduces the dielectric effect on the signal conductor, preserving transient accuracy and dynamic contrast in the bass frequencies.
  • Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS): Dissipates RFI and EMI before noise reaches the ground plane, avoiding the ground modulation caused by conventional single-layer shield designs.
  • Symmetrical Coax Geometry: Concentric conductor and shield arrangement ensures consistent impedance and electrical characteristics along the full cable length.
  • Cold-Welded Gold-Plated Plugs: Gold-plated RCA terminations resist corrosion and oxidation, while the cold-weld process avoids solder-related signal degradation at the termination point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AudioQuest Black Lab subwoofer cable?

The AudioQuest Black Lab is a dedicated RCA subwoofer interconnect built with Solid Long-Grain Copper conductors, foamed polyethylene insulation, a Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System, and symmetrical coaxial geometry. It is designed to transmit the low-frequency signal from a preamplifier, AV receiver, or integrated amplifier to a powered subwoofer with minimum noise and distortion. Terminations are cold-welded gold-plated RCA plugs for reliable, long-term connection quality.

How does the AudioQuest Black Lab compare to the AudioQuest Greyhound or Forest subwoofer cable?

The AudioQuest Black Lab sits at the entry level of the AudioQuest subwoofer cable range, using Solid Long-Grain Copper conductors and a Metal-Layer NDS shield. The Greyhound steps up with Perfect-Surface Copper (PSC) conductors and a more refined noise-dissipation configuration, while the Forest adds further improvements to conductor purity and insulation geometry. For most home theatre and music subwoofer applications, the Black Lab delivers a meaningful improvement over generic or included subwoofer cables, with the Greyhound and above suited to higher-resolution systems where subwoofer integration and low-level bass detail are a priority.

Can the AudioQuest Black Lab be used with any powered subwoofer?

Yes, the AudioQuest Black Lab is compatible with any powered subwoofer that accepts a standard RCA line-level input, which includes virtually all home theatre and stereo subwoofers from brands such as SVS, REL, Velodyne, Paradigm, and Klipsch. It connects from the subwoofer output or LFE output on a preamplifier or AV receiver to the line-level or LFE input on the subwoofer. For subwoofers with a single RCA input, one Black Lab is sufficient; subwoofers with dual RCA inputs may benefit from two cables or a single Y-split configuration.

What is Long-Grain Copper and how does it differ from standard OFC copper?

Long-Grain Copper is a refined copper conductor type used by AudioQuest that features fewer and longer grain boundaries compared to standard oxygen-free copper (OFC). In standard copper conductors, signal energy must cross many grain boundaries as it travels along the conductor, each one introducing a small amount of distortion and high-frequency noise. Long-Grain Copper reduces the frequency of these boundaries, lowering the cumulative distortion across the conductor length. In the context of a subwoofer cable, this translates to tighter, more accurate bass reproduction with less smearing of transient attacks.

What is the Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System on the AudioQuest Black Lab?

AudioQuest's Metal-Layer Noise-Dissipation System is a shield configuration designed to prevent RFI captured by the cable's outer shield from draining directly to the component ground reference. In a conventional coaxial shield, absorbed interference is routed to ground, which modulates the ground plane and introduces noise into the signal. The NDS on the Black Lab interposes a metal layer that dissipates this energy before it reaches the ground connection, keeping the ground reference stable and reducing low-level noise in the bass signal path.

Where can I buy the AudioQuest Black Lab subwoofer cable in Toronto or Canada?

The AudioQuest Black Lab subwoofer cable is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorized AudioQuest dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound stocks the AudioQuest subwoofer cable lineup in-store and online, with full manufacturer warranty coverage for Canadian customers.

Does subwoofer cable quality make an audible difference?

Yes, subwoofer cable quality can make an audible difference, particularly in the areas of bass transient accuracy, low-level detail, and noise floor. Generic or poorly shielded subwoofer cables are susceptible to RFI pickup, which can introduce hum or a low-level noise floor into the subwoofer's amplifier section. Cables with strand-interaction distortion can soften bass transients and reduce the sense of impact and control. The AudioQuest Black Lab's solid LGC conductors and Metal-Layer NDS address both of these issues, making it a worthwhile upgrade over cables supplied with a subwoofer or sourced from a general electronics retailer.

Pretty Darn Good
Format: Kindle
So I’ve been on a omega kick and this definitely hit the spot. Madison was frustrating at times with how she acted towards Lucas, Gray, and Rian. It was like she said towards the end, she didn’t believe she deserved nice things. It would have been nice to hear from her best friends again. They kind of were there in the beginning and the gone except for mention of text messages received from them. I feel like her friends would have been great help in encouraging Madison to go with the pack and never give Brent another chance because he was toxic. I loved Rian. His personality was awesome. His humor. His ability to make Madison comfortable whenever she was feeling overwhelmed. And the fact he fell for her and she fell for him first. They are cute together. I do feel like Lucas was the odd man out though. Like Lucas didn’t develop as much of a relationship with Madison. I would have really liked to see more development in the relationship between them. It was also the same with him and Rian. There is really no relationship displayed. Most of the relationship being displayed is between Rian and Gray. Nevertheless, I loved reading about the dynamic that came to fruition during the entirety of this story. Madison finally got her happiness. And Brent finally got punched in the face. Everyone got exactly what they deserve.

Pack's Promise was okay but not great
Format: Kindle
Pack's Promise was okay but not great. I won't recommend it to anyone that I know. PRO: * Very likable characters * Lots of steamy scenes that are written very well * The spelling and grammar are good * The punctuation is good with the exception of using hyphens instead of commas. Lots of hyphens. Lots and lots of hyphens. CON: * Almost no interactions with any characters outside of Madison and the pack * Nearly no plot. They meet, get together for a heat, agree to make it permanent, done * Quite a few typos such as extraneous words, missing words and words out of order THINGS TO KNOW: * More steamy scenes than storytelling * A lot of MM & MMM, some MFMM during heat

Fluffy and Nice Omegaverse
Format: Kindle
… this would have made 5 stars but for 2 reasons. A.) there were quite a few typos; misspelled words, missing quotations, “the his” mistakes, and various signs that maybe a proofread would do good. B.) the writing was quite textbook. Late blooming omega is struggling with her new self, finds a absurdly wealthy pack of alphas, every thing is almost insta-love but she resists, then decides to love herself and let everyone be happy. Rian was my favourite (obviously the author’s favourite too because he got the most page time) but I wish we could see more of his CEO side? He went to work maybe ONCE the entire time. Gray was supposed to be the “growly one” but he turned out to be puppy dog. Lucas was a genius brainiac doctor - but also super alpha with an aggressive hindbrain with a breeding k*nk?? And then there was no actual “breeding”?? Spice 3/5 - normally omegaverse books are super high on messy smut but this was tamer. Romance 3/5 - insta-love that was then resisted because of personal hangup’s Plot 2/5 - weird paced head hopping, showing the same scene from different POV’s that made me feel like it was 2 steps backward, 1 step forward. Humour 4/5 - there were a dozen lines that genuinely made me chuckle out loud Would have been five stars but the lack of proofreading and the predictable plot made me unable to get up to ADORED IT level - four stars is still and official ENJOYED IT, y’all. This isn’t a bad rating. The “Club Heat” has intriguing possibilities so I’m going to give the second one a shot.

A good read
Format: Kindle
A good read, just fluffy cuteness, no antagonism. I like all the characters. It could have used another round of editing however, glanfds being one error that cracked me up, and my personal pet peeve was that the author kept using the word fill instead of feel, which I promise you are not interchangeable haha, but it's definitely better than the majority of books I read on here mistake-wise.
