We have tasted the Le Corti Chianti Classico change immensely over the past decade. Always fans of Duccio and the Corsini’s family and their approach the winemaking, when the family decided that less was more a few years back the wines sky-rocketed in quality. This Chianti Classico is pristine, maybe a funny word to use but it’s the word that comes to mind. Pure, precise and exquisite Sangiovese fruit expression on the nose and on the palate. By that we mean juicy yet velvety cherry fruit character that is underpinned by an earthy, almost meaty like note. There are floral notes on the nose here too which is incredibly enticing and wonderfully elegant. On the palate, the acidity is as you would hope, high and zippy but not out of balance. Like a conveyor belt for the flavours and textures, the acidity carries this wine forward and long into the finish. Flavours of red cherry, cranberry, red bramble berries and a subtle spicy nuance dance on the palate and they give way to savoury and harmonious finish. This is your wine for Pasta al pomodoro – bar none! Lasagne, Bolognese, Puttanesca, Amatriciana, you will struggle to do better than the Le Corti Chianti Classico as a partner.
Unlike many Chianti Classico wines, the Le Corti example has not been overworked or overoaked. In the mid-2000s, Le Corte changed their approach to winemaking, the converted to organic farming, they switched to indigenous yeasts, and they decided to focus on whole berries during fermentation. All of this, combined with an embracing of their cooler, northern position within the Chianti Classico region, has seen them produce elegant, ethereal and bright styles of Chianti – for which we are very thankful. This Chianti Classico is vinified and aged mostly in cement tanks, with a small portion spending time in large oak casks, with the producers preferring the wine to express varietal purity over winemaking technique. This should be in your wine rack at all times, it certainly is ours!
