Technics SL-50C Direct Drive Turntable at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Technics SL-50C is a direct drive turntable from Technics (Osaka, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Built on Technics' proven coreless direct drive motor heritage, the SL-50C combines accurate, maintenance-free rotation with a compact MDF cabinet, an included Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, and a built-in MM phono equaliser precisely matched to that cartridge for immediate, optimised vinyl playback. Available in Terracotta Brown, Black, and Grey, and supporting 33⅓, 45, and 78 rpm, the SL-50C is designed for both vinyl newcomers and listeners upgrading from entry-level setups who want genuine Technics performance in a modern, room-friendly design.

Coreless Direct Drive with Digital Precision

The SL-50C's brushless DC coreless direct drive motor eliminates the iron core that causes cogging in conventional direct drive designs, delivering smooth, stable rotation at all three playback speeds. Digital control elevates rotational accuracy through three combined measures: precise speed detection circuitry, per-unit motor calibration performed during production at the factory, and digitally optimised motor drive signals. The 1.26 kg die-cast aluminium platter uses reinforced ribs and a directly mounted motor magnet for rigid rotation and precise torque control, achieving 0.025% W.R.M.S. wow and flutter from a turntable that starts from standstill to 33⅓ rpm in 0.7 seconds.

Built-In Phono Stage Matched to the Ortofon 2M Red

The SL-50C's built-in MM phono equaliser is tuned specifically to the included Ortofon 2M Red cartridge for optimal performance from the first play. Premium components and a shielded case keep noise to a minimum. Separate PCBs for power supply, motor control, and phono equaliser circuits are physically positioned away from the tonearm with crossover-free wiring, minimising interference between the motor drive and the sensitive phono signal path. The result is a clean, detailed sound that connects directly to any active speaker or standard line-level amplifier input without a separate phono stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Technics SL-50C?

The Technics SL-50C is a coreless direct drive turntable with digital motor control, a 1.26 kg aluminium die-cast platter, an included Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, and a built-in MM phono equaliser precisely matched to that cartridge. It supports 33⅓, 45, and 78 rpm, achieves 0.025% W.R.M.S. wow and flutter, and is available in Terracotta Brown, Black, and Grey MDF cabinets. It connects directly to any amplifier or active speaker without a separate phono stage.

Does the Technics SL-50C need a separate phono preamplifier?

No. The SL-50C includes a built-in MM phono equaliser tuned to the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, with a LINE output for direct connection to any amplifier with a standard line-level input or to active speakers. A separate PHONO output is also available for those who prefer to use an external phono stage.

What is the difference between the Technics SL-50C and the SL-1500C?

Both include a built-in phono stage and a bundled cartridge. The SL-1500C uses a more elaborate two-layer chassis with glass-fibre-reinforced ABS, a higher-specification gimbal-suspension magnesium tonearm matching the SL-1200 series standard, a passive auto-lift mechanism, and an Ortofon 2M Red on a heavier platter. The SL-50C is more compact, lighter, available in more colour options, and uses a simpler aluminium S-shape tonearm and a smaller platter, making it better suited to compact spaces and style-forward interiors. For the most complete audiophile feature set, the SL-1500C is the step up.

What cartridge comes with the Technics SL-50C?

The SL-50C includes the Ortofon 2M Red, mounted on the included headshell at the factory. The 2M Red uses an elliptical stylus and shares its cartridge body with the entire 2M series, meaning the stylus can be upgraded to the 2M Blue without replacing the cartridge body itself for an accessible performance upgrade.

Can I use a different cartridge with the Technics SL-50C?

Yes. The SL-50C uses a standard half-inch detachable headshell, making it compatible with any MM cartridge. Note that the built-in phono equaliser is optimised for the included 2M Red; for other MM cartridges the built-in stage will still function correctly, though optimal matching is to the 2M Red. Contact Vinyl Sound Toronto for cartridge upgrade recommendations.

What colours is the Technics SL-50C available in?

The SL-50C is available in Terracotta Brown, Black, and Grey MDF cabinet finishes. Contact Vinyl Sound Toronto to confirm current stock availability in your preferred colour.

Where can I buy the Technics SL-50C in Toronto or Canada?

The Technics SL-50C is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada, an authorised Technics dealer. Contact us to discuss colour options, system pairing, and to arrange a visit to our listening room.

My pick for Best YA from 2015
Format: Kindle
I don't usually like Westerns, but this historical novel reads like a racially diverse Little House on the Prairie. There's a touch of romance, but the most important relationship is the friendship between these two resourceful girls. The writing is superb with well developed characters, a fast pace and a fine sense of place and period (1849). Despite dealing with tough issues like murder, slavery and racism, it still manages to be a feel good story, appropriate for tweens as well as teens. The girl protagonists are 15 and 16 and the boys are a bit older. This debut tops my list of best YA from 2015 that I've read to date: http://blog.sarahlaurence.com/2015/12/best-ya-books-of-2015.html

There is some attempted sexual violence. Otherwise this is a good book for middle and high schoolers. Story of a Chinese American and African American girl on the run in the wild wild west.

... into YA Westerns and I have yet to be disappointed. Under a Painted Sky is a diverse
Format: Hardcover
Over the past year I have made a foray into YA Westerns and I have yet to be disappointed. Under a Painted Sky is a diverse, cultural infused tale of two girls, Our main character, Sam a Chinese, newly orphaned girl, teams up with Annamae (Andy), an African-America, runaway slave. Together they flee St. Joe, Missouri disguised as boys and begin on the Oregon Trail. They soon join three cowboys who help keep them safe and teach them how to survive. I think what I loved most about this book is how Lee was able to incorporate Sam's Chinese heritage and beliefs along with Andy's and intertwine all it beautifully into this richly told story. Sam's and Andy's friendship was also a highlight of the book. It caused for some great moments, some funny, many heartfelt, and I was glad to see such a positive example of female friendship in a YA novel. Although "girl disguised as boy" seem to be a common theme in YA westerns I did not mind it here and thought Sam's inner thoughts about the challenges of pretending to be a boy were hilarious. I think Lee struck the perfect balance between an adventure story, a coming of age tale, and portrait of what life could be like for minorities and females in the 1800s

A great BeeHive Award Winner!
Format: Kindle
This is a BeeHive Award winner for young adults! What a great read! It is a page turner, that's for sure. Two runaways--a slave and a Chinese girl--take to the trail West during the big Gold Rush. They meet up and join three young men traveling West to seek their fortunes. The catch? The girls are disguised as "boys!" The adventures begin! Fast paced book. Highly recommend it for young adults, but I really enjoyed it, too. Written well and in all situations, the characters were believable! I did make some predictions that, in fact, came true. Didn't ruin the story for me at all--only heightened my anticipation! Great read!

I absolutely loved everything about this story
Format: Kindle
I absolutely loved everything about this story. At first I was unsure of the time period, I've never been a huge western fan, but I'm so glad I picked this up. Not only were the historical details interesting, but the characters were timeless. Sammy was such a beautiful, courageous, complex main character, I couldn't help but root for her. The memories of her father and her connection to him through music was heartbreaking, and her heritage touched every facet of her life on the run. The family she formed with the cowboys and Andy was so genuine and real, and made me laugh in unexpected places. The action was fast paced and something was always happening, so it was hard to put down. Highly recommend this story for anyone who's a fan of adventure, strong female relationships, and romance. A++
