On the nose, this blend of Grechetto, Trebbiano, Verdello, and Malvasia opens with soft floral aromas of citrus blossom, chamomile, and white peach, layered with fresh pear, subtle herbs, and a whisper of anise. A light trace of fennel frond and wildflower honey rounds out the aromatic profile, evoking an Italian hillside in bloom.
On the palate, it’s bright and racy, with a backbone of lemon-lime zest and green apple skin. A gentle saline tension and minerally core give it precision, while lees aging adds just enough mid-palate weight to keep things interesting. The finish is savory, stony, and refreshingly clean—like a cold breeze off Lake Bolsena. A beautifully balanced white that shows Orvieto’s true potential when handled with care.
About the Winery
Just outside the medieval town of Orvieto, on the slopes of Rocca Ripesena in Umbria, lies Palazzone—a historic estate where winemaking tradition meets quiet innovation. The property dates back to the 13th century, when it served as a pilgrims’ hostel under Pope Boniface VIII. Fast forward several centuries and a major transformation began in 1969, when Angelo Dubini purchased the then-abandoned site.
With vision and patience, Dubini restored the original palazzo, planted 25 hectares of vines, and by 1988 had established a modern winery. Today, the estate is still firmly in family hands, now overseen by Angelo’s sons Giovanni and Lodovico, with Giovanni’s son Pietro representing the third generation.
Palazzone farms organically (though uncertified), relying on sustainable practices like cover cropping, minimal chemical use, and integrated pest management. The Dubinis are champions of their region’s native grape varieties—particularly Grechetto and Procanico—and focus on crafting wines that are terroir-driven, expressive, and age-worthy.
Their approach is both classical and precise: careful vineyard work, low-intervention cellar methods, and a deep respect for the land. The wines are celebrated for their balance, nuance, and food-friendliness, offering a true taste of Umbria’s volcanic hills and calcareous soils.
In addition to the winery, the estate includes a boutique hotel nestled in the refurbished palazzo—offering visitors the chance to sip and stay among the vines, immersed in Orvieto’s ancient beauty.
