Collectors Edition Book: Two bookplates, made from handmade paper by Sienna Cherrico, were mounted in the inside cover by the Cherrico Pottery Team, using archival glue. One bookplate signifies the book as a Collectors Edition, exclusively available here on mugsandbooks.com It bares an insignia that matches the mug. The second bookplate was sent to Steven Pressfield, autographed, then mounted in your book.

These mugs are inspired by the ancient Spartan warriors who fought in the famous Battle of Thermopylae, which happened almost exactly 2,500 years ago from August, 2020. Legend tells how 300 Spartan soldiers fought to defend their homeland against an invading army of millions.

Steven Pressfield is an acclaimed author who writes about ancient Spartan culture in his world renowned books Gates of FireThe Warrior Ethos and more. Researching Spartan battle equipment, Steven became intrigued by one passage from Plutarch’s Life of Lycurgus. The passage is not about shields or swords or armor but about a common drinking mug.

"...the Spartan kothon or drinking cup...is especially valued for use on [military] campaigns. Visibly off-putting elements in [stream or river] water which had to be drunk were concealed by its color, while the dirt in the liquid was trapped in the lip, so that what reached the mouth for drinking was cleaner.”

No one today knows exactly what this ancient vessel looked like. Steven challenged potter Joel Cherrico to recreate a modern-day version.

Joel handcrafted a mug with a wide base and black interior, with the shell tapering to a compact drinking lip. On the outside, Joel added a design inspired by the Spartan battle shields, which bore the Greek letter lambda. Lambda stood for Laconia (or Lacedaemon), the region of Greece of which Sparta was the principal city. It became a symbol of pride for the warriors of Sparta, and an emblem of terror for any force that had to face them on the battlefield.

Joel used a red glaze inspired by the scarlet cloaks the warriors of Lacedaemon wore to war. The color was meant to obscure the sight of blood, so that if an individual Spartan was wounded, his incapacity would be hidden from the enemy.

Today, most of us will never drink from mud puddles or be called upon to forage under combat conditions for the necessities of life. But we all face harrowing battles in our own lives: pain, injustice, even death. This mug lets you drink your morning coffee inspired by the superior equipment, training, discipline, and fearlessness of the ancient Spartans.

Your mug will be wrapped in rough, scarlet cloth as an homage to the cloaks worn by Spartan warriors. Your book is protected by a wrapping of tissue paper, and mugs and books are shipped together.

Additions of clay on the handle help these mugs look and feel handmade, emphasizing how they were formed with Joel Cherrico's hands on a pottery kick-wheel. Finger marks on the bottom of each mug were left intentionally, showing how the pots were dipped in glaze by hand.

All pottery is handmade by Joel Cherrico. All of our Stoneware and porcelain pottery is 100% food and non-toxic. Mugs are meant to be used and enjoyed daily. Mugs are dishwasher safe, but we recommend hand washing all pottery. Most mugs are microwave safe but some experimental colors might have metal colors that cause the pottery to be non-microwaveable.

Pottery is inherently brittle compared to other, non-brittle materials like metal. If you hit your mug against a surface or drop it, it can break. Broken pottery cannot be repaired. But with careful use, pottery can remain identical for thousands of years.

Best face sun protection
My Neutrogena one stung my eyes and made me constantly tear and this is soooo much better. It feels light and dries down well without feeling greasy. Also it didn't make my skin react. A++

Greasy but light
It's very lightweight and is definitely hydrating it's lightly greasy after its dry and it is not matte but has a dewy shine to it , I have tried many sunscreens and settled on this one as it just has a nicer feel to it and is easier to apply everyday, it goes on quickly and leaves no white streaks at all Its more watery than thick And does NOT peel whatsoever I Would definitely recommend this as a daily Face sunscreen if you not mind the shine it has to it. Its convenient Yet the bottle is small and last only about a 1 to 3 weeks depending how many times you use it To bad They DO NOT MAKE A BIGGER SIZE

Hydrating sunscreen
This is a great sunscreen for dry sensitive skin, even combination skin specifically if you’re using acne products that can dry out your skin. My dermatologist recommended this to me due to my rosacea and dry flaky skin. It helped me maintain my skin moisturize during the day, also adds a healthy glow to the skin. It has a liquid consistency which I love cause it makes it so much easier to blend and absorbs faster into the skin. I wouldn’t recommend so much for oily skin though, it can make you look greasy really quick!!
