The Texture of Change: Dress, Self-Fashioning, and History in Western Africa, 1700-1850The Texture of Change examines historical change across a broad region of western Africa from Saint Louis, Senegal, to Freetown, Sierra Leone through the development of textile commerce, consumption, and dress. The Texture of Change examines historical change across a broad region of western Africa--from Saint Louis, Senegal, to Freetown, Sierra Leone--through the development of textile commerce, consumption, and dress. Indigo-dyed and printed cotton, wool, linen, and silk cloths constituted major trade items that linked African producers and consumers to exchange networks that were both regional and global. While much of the historiography of commerce in Africa in the eighteenth century has focused on the Atlantic slave trade and its impact, this study follows the global cloth trade to account for the broad extent and multiple modes of western Africa's engagement with Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Jody Benjamin analyzes a range of archival, visual, oral, and material sources drawn from three continents to illuminate entanglements between local textile industries and global commerce and between the politics of Islamic reform and encroaching European colonial power. The study highlights the roles of a diverse range of historical actors mentioned only glancingly in core-periphery or Atlantic-centered framings: women indigo dyers, maroon cotton farmers, petty traveling merchants, caravan guides, and African Diaspora settlers. It argues that their combined choices within a set of ecological, political, and economic constraints structured networks connecting the Atlantic and Indian Ocean perimeters.

Interesting pillowcase that does run cool to the touch
To begin: I'm a 64 y/o woman who still gets hot flashes, despite air-conditioning and a fan blowing on me at night. It's the sheets off then blankets on routine that so many of us know. I ordered this pillowcase hoping that I would find some kind of relief in the night, even it was only for my head. The fabric is very unusual. It's a silky nylon blend, very swishy and soft. It reminds me of luxury, expensive women's lingerie. It's extremely slippery, moreso when you have your head on it; there certainly won't be any resistance or pulling on the hair all night. I washed it before using it, put it in a mesh bag to protect it from getting snagged. It washed and dried as good as new. One thing to note: because it is so slippery the pillow may want to slide a little out of the pillowcase. I slept quite well and did not experience any heat or sweating on it. The reason for the 4* and not 5* is the price, at almost $20 it is a bit pricey for a rectangle of nylon fabric. I could see if it were real silk, but it's not. Otherwise it's exactly what it purports to be.

The perfect cooling pillows!!
Photo taken after about half of the filling was removed and many months of use. Still my favorite pillows ever! I absolutely love these adjustable cooling pillows! They keep me cool all night long (must use without a pillowcase for cooling effect.) They arrived with enough filling to make them super firm and extremely thick. They took several hours to fully puff up. I removed about half the filling to make a more plush pillow which I prefer and they’re still thick and comfy. They offer the perfect amount of support. I’m actually sleeping better! Bonus: I saved the extra filling and used it to stuff throw pillow covers.
