The first two instruments in the series, Virgilio and Caronte, embody the guiding wisdom and inevitable fate of the afterlife. 

Virgilio, the unwavering guide through Inferno and Purgatorio, is portrayed in a refined ivory acrylic resin with hints of laurel green and fire red, symbolizing wisdom and enlightenment. Adorned with bright yellow gold trims and a signature central ring, this pen embodies the poet's noble spirit. In stark contrast, the Caronte pen evokes the turbulent waters of the infernal river with its striking dark gray-blue coloration and dark ruthenium finishes.  These two opposing presentations, offered in representation of the two opposing figures in Dante's allegory, present a delightful contrast to each other and showcase the seemingly bottomless creativity of the Visconti designers and artisans.
