Introducing the Better Boxwood Skylight — a historical breakthrough in the world of gardening. With over two decades of breeding and trials we are prepared to present to you the blight resistant, blight fighter line up! The Better Boxwood Skylight stands impressively at 6–8’ high and 3–4’ wide earning it the title of the grandest in stature among the four new Better Boxwood releases. It has tiny evergreen foliage in mid-green that grows a shade lighter in spring before maturing to match the established branches.

Additionally, the Skylight boasts the fastest growth rate of the Better Boxwood range, ensuring quicker landscape transformations and heightened aesthetic appeal. Beyond its pleasing form, the Skylight also shines bright in terms of durability. This cultivar is armored with a remarkable resistance to the dreaded boxwood blight!

Whether you're crafting a sophisticated hedge, topiary, boundary, or just a solitary centerpiece its moderate stature ensures it fits just right, never overwhelming your garden space but always standing out with a vibrant, evergreen shimmer. These shrubs have been designed to thrive with moderate watering and are highly adaptable, flourishing under both sunlight and partial shade.

Better Boxwood - The Blight Fighter

This new cultivar of Boxwoods has been bred to be more resistant to boxwood blight which a devastating disease that affects traditional boxwoods. Boxwood blight is caused by the fungus Calonectria pseudonaviculata and can lead to rapid defoliation and death of the plants.

Although bred to be blight resistant, it's always a good idea to follow best practices for boxwood care to ensure the healthiest plants. This includes proper spacing for airflow, not watering the foliage directly, and regularly inspecting for any signs of disease or pests.

Better Boxwood Skylight Care

Better Boxwood Sunlight Requirements

The Better Boxwood Skylight is a true sun enthusiast. This shrub, with its vibrant green foliage, thrives best when bathed in full sunlight. Its love for sun not only ensures robust growth, but also allows the best possible leaf coloration and overall health. Gardeners seeking a plant that can stand resiliently under the sun's full glare will find the Better Boxwood Skylight to be a perfect choice.

When To Prune Better Boxwood Shrubs

While the Skylight will maintain its natural shape well, you can prune it for a more refined appearance or to maintain a specific size. It's best to prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

Are Better Boxwoods Cold Hardy?

YES! The Better Boxwood Skylight thrives across a diverse range of USDA hardiness zones, showcasing its adaptability and resilience to varying climate conditions. Particularly favored in zones 5 through 9, this cultivar is adept at handling temperature fluctuations experienced within these regions. USDA Hardiness Zone 5 has a temperate climate with average minimum winter temperatures ranging from -20°F to -10°F.

How Often Should Better Boxwoods Be Watered?

For optimal growth and health, the Skylight prefers well-draining soil, ensuring its roots are not left waterlogged and susceptible to rot. When it comes to watering, a consistent yet moderate routine is best, ensuring the soil remains moist but not overly saturated. The ideal soil type for this boxwood is a loamy blend that is rich in organic matter. Contrary to common perception, Boxwoods do NOT care for acidic soil. Plant in soil with a pH between 6.5-7.2.

Perfect for ball demolishers
Size: Medium
The dogs love the chuck it brand. I don’t know what it’s made of but they go crazy over them. Will not play with another ball. Wonder if it’s “laced” with an addictive scent. Have pits. Very durable. Not able to chew to pieces. Last for about 6 months before there is a small break. I keep a back up because when the ball goes missing the house is in chaos. 😆 🤪

Chuckit medium rebound balls
Size: Medium
My 8 month old German shepherd dog loves these balls. They are easy to throw, they bounce great, they are very chewable! She keeps one in her mouth most of the time. It satisfies her need to chew and she does not chew other things. She drops it in the water and lets the hole fill up and drinks that way. The only problem that has caused is suction in her mouth and difficulty in dislodging it for her. However, she would be lost without it!

These are definitely indestructible
Size: Medium
Both of my dogs can destroy a ball in a matter of minutes if I let them play with them (supervised) as is. Well not with these balls. They are the ONLY ones I have found that are 100% indestructible. Please only let your dogs play with these as a toy when supervised though. They go really far when throwing them, so both dogs get a good amount of running and exercise with these. I also bought these because they have the hole in the middle of the ball which is very important in the event that a dog gets one stuck at the back of their throat. This allows them to breath unlike those without this hold. It's an unlikely event, but as dog owners, we all need to be aware of this and educate ourselves on what to do if this SHOULD happen. This isn't a scare tactic, nor a reflection of this particular brand, it can happen with any type of ball. My two dogs are about 45ish lbs and the size is perfect for them, I don't want anything smaller than this. They love them. There is no annoying squeak. Really easy to wash after use. Some balls take forever to get the slimy saliva off, but these don't.
