Allium Ambassador really lives up to its name by boasting tiny star-shaped blooms in giant flowerheads, each up to 18cm in diameter. These neatly spherical umbels of flowers are a vibrant shade of deep purple and bloom on strong upright stems for weeks on end, reaching an eventual height of up to 1.2m. At their best from May to June, they are a magnet for pollinators, enticing bees and butterflies into the garden. Even after fading, the spent flowerheads can be left in place for added textural interest.

These 28+ Allium bulbs are available to purchase from early September to mid-December and are relatively easy to grow and care for. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil and dig a hole around 3 times as deep as the size of the bulb. Place the bulb in the hole with the pointed side facing the sky and fill in the hole, firming gently to remove air pockets, then water well. When planting multiple bulbs, position them at least twice the size of the bulb apart, to make space for the large flowerheads. The ideal time for planting Allium Ambassador bulbs is mid to late autumn.

Ambassador is a low-maintenance perennial that doesn’t need much looking after. It is fully hardy and suitable for container gardening as well as growing in beds and borders. Water regularly, especially during dry spells and allow the plants to die back completely at the end of the season before cutting them away, ready for new growth the following spring.
