Rapturous strings soar through a deafening, blackened turmoil– one part iridescent, another part melancholy. Here, in their debut “a pain bloomed from my lungs”, Philadelphia’s Lástima offers up the culmination of their blackgaze experimentations in a record which not only illustrates a band’s maturation of their sound, but wields that sonic confidence to best sustain a record steeped in sincere and vulnerable reckonings with grief, as well as identity. Lástima’s palette of genres, existing in the oft-taped spaces of post-hardcore and post-metal which inform particularly evocative and compelling blackgaze, and their emphasis on musical juxtaposition and catharsis mirror its preoccupations with dualities and between-ness: loss and family, immigration, imperialism, and living in diaspora, and mixed-race identity. The disharmony and contrast is itself a fruitful, harmonious device which conveys more complex anguish, generational wounds.
