Understanding the Artistic Context of First Steps
The Influence of Jean-François Millet on Van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh's "First Steps (after Millet)" draws inspiration from the renowned French painter Jean-François Millet. Millet's focus on rural life and the dignity of peasant labor profoundly impacted Van Gogh. In this artwork, Van Gogh pays homage to Millet's themes of motherhood and the nurturing bond between parent and child. This connection highlights the importance of family and the simplicity of life in the countryside, which were central to both artists' philosophies.Historical Significance of the Painting in the Post-Impressionist Movement
Created in 1890, "First Steps" stands as a significant piece within the Post-Impressionist movement. This period was marked by a departure from traditional techniques, embracing emotional expression and bold colors. Van Gogh's work reflects this shift, showcasing his unique style that combines realism with expressive brushwork. The painting captures a moment of tenderness, emphasizing the emotional depth that characterizes much of Van Gogh's oeuvre.Visual Analysis: Composition and Color Palette
Examining the Use of Earthy Tones and Natural Light
In "First Steps," Van Gogh employs a rich palette of earthy tones, including warm browns, soft greens, and gentle yellows. These colors evoke a sense of warmth and intimacy, drawing viewers into the scene. The natural light illuminates the figures, enhancing the emotional connection between the mother and child. This use of light not only highlights their bond but also reflects the beauty of everyday life in rural settings.Symbolism of the Figures: A Mother and Child's Bond
The central figures in "First Steps" symbolize the universal experience of motherhood. The mother, depicted with a nurturing presence, supports her child as they take their first steps. This moment captures the essence of growth and development, representing hope and the future. Van Gogh's portrayal of this intimate relationship resonates with viewers, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences of love and care.Van Gogh's Unique Brushwork Techniques in First Steps
Impasto and Its Role in Creating Texture
Van Gogh's signature impasto technique is evident in "First Steps." He applies thick layers of paint, creating a textured surface that adds depth to the composition. This technique not only enhances the visual appeal but also conveys the emotional intensity of the scene. The tactile quality of the paint invites viewers to engage with the artwork on a sensory level.Dynamic Movement Captured Through Brush Strokes
The dynamic movement in "First Steps" is achieved through Van Gogh's expressive brush strokes. The swirling lines and energetic application of paint convey a sense of motion, capturing the child's tentative steps. This movement reflects the excitement and uncertainty of new beginnings, making the viewer feel the energy of the moment.Thematic Exploration: Motherhood and Nurturing in Art
How First Steps Reflect the Universal Experience of Parenting
"First Steps" encapsulates the universal themes of motherhood and nurturing. Van Gogh's portrayal of the mother and child resonates with anyone who has experienced the joys and challenges of parenting. The painting serves as a reminder of the love and support that shape our early experiences, making it a timeless piece that speaks to generations.Comparative Analysis with Other Works Depicting Motherhood
When compared to other masterpieces depicting motherhood, such as Mary Cassatt's "The Child's Bath," "First Steps" stands out for its raw emotionality. Works well. Easy to carry.
Size: 1-Gallon 2-Value Pack
My 2-gallon sprayer’s nozzle cracked — leading to Spectracide dribbles along my path through the yard…not good!
Since a replacement nozzle cost as much as a new sprayer, so began the search for a new unit. I admit that lugging a full 2-gal sprayer around the yard, although it required no refilling, became quite tiring and blister-inducing; I then began reading reviews for 1-gal …
Horror stories about bad seals, leaks, no pressure, etc. had me dismayed. However, since Amazon’s return policy is easy, I decided on this 2-pack of 1-gal Chapin 22000. If needing my usual 1.5-2 gallons of weed killer, I could always fill BOTH ahead of time and save myself some blisters and backache!
Never having used pressurized sprayers WITHOUT pressure relief valves, I was slightly hesitant to buy these, though…well, I guess I’ll just have to be extremely careful to not get the poisonous spray on myself when removing the pump! ☠️
Sprayers arrived in perfect, brand new condition; all parts/pieces were received. Assembly was super easy, even WITHOUT referring to instruction manual — used channel locks to tighten the hose, as pliers could not be located and hands are not very strong. Tested/practiced with water. Got a feel for how many pumps were necessary and adjusted the spray tip to my preference.
My last sprayer required opening the PRV and then squeezing sprayer to empty hose/release remaining pressure in order to be able to unscrew pump handle. The directions for THESE say to simply unscrew the handle a bit until you can hear the built-up pressure vent out. I did just that — no explosive spray to the face and the pump handle unscrewed easily. WHEW!
So, today was the sprayer’s maiden voyage around the yard.
I followed the directions to pump the handle until resistance is felt (maybe 8x?). WOW — so much easier to carry! Pressure is great — liquid shot out about 15’! Although the “feel” of the sprayer trigger is cheap and small (even for female hands), it was quite responsive and allowed for a steady stream with no leaks/dribbles.
Happy with this purchase and hope I can get at least a few years out of them. 🤞🏼
Also, after I’d placed my order, I just happened to be in WM’s lawn/garden section…
These are sold there, as well, for a higher price. They seem to be very popular, too, as nearly all were gone from the shelf.

Simple, Reliable Pump Sprayer with Easy Locking Trigger
Size: 1-Gallon
This pump sprayer is very straightforward to set up and gets ready for use quickly without any complicated assembly. The locking trigger is a standout feature since it allows continuous spraying without needing to constantly hold the handle down, which makes longer watering or treatment tasks much easier on the hand. The spray output feels consistent and controlled, and it works well for garden applications like fertilizer, herbicide, or general watering. The build quality feels solid enough for regular home and garden use, and the tank is easy to fill and pressurize without much effort. The handle and pump action feel smooth, and overall operation is simple and intuitive. Considering the ease of use, practical locking trigger, quick setup, and reliable performance, it offers good value for the money for everyday garden and yard maintenance tasks.

Great, Affordable, Pump Sprayer
Size: 1-Gallon
This is an affordable pump pressure sprayer. It works the same as, if not better than, other higher priced sprayers I have used. Itnis easy to clean and has an adjustment tip to change the amount of spray and width of spray. With it only being 1 gallon it is easy to carry while walking the perimeter of my home to spray for pests.

Good
Size: 1-Gallon
I’ve used this sprayer for applying fertilizer, insect control, and watering plants, and overall it works really well for basic lawn and garden jobs. The pump builds pressure quickly, and the adjustable nozzle gives a nice range from mist to stream. I also like the translucent tank because it makes it easy to see fluid levels while mixing.
The anti-clog filter is a nice feature and helped keep the spray consistent during use. It’s lightweight and comfortable to carry around the yard.
The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that some of the plastic parts feel a little lightweight, and I noticed a slight drip from the nozzle after extended use. Still, for the price and performance, it’s a solid sprayer and gets the job done well.
