About the work

Chantal Joffe has created a pair of new artists’ editions co-published by Whitechapel Gallery and Art on the Underground.

As part of the Crossrail Art Programme and selected by Whitechapel Gallery, a series of portraits entitled A Sunday Afternoon in Whitechapel by London-based artist Chantal Joffe (b. 1969, UK) can be found across the newly opened Elizabeth Line platforms at Whitechapel station. Inspired by painters such as Matisse and Picasso, Joffe’s full series derive from 20 collaged cut-outs of passers-by captured by the artist one Sunday afternoon on Whitechapel High Street.

To celebrate the recent opening of London’s newest line. In an inaugural collaboration between Whitechapel Gallery and Art on the Underground, Joffe has selected two portraits from the series to be made available as special silkscreen prints.

About the artist

Chantal Joffe brings a combination of insight and integrity, as well as psychological and emotional force, to the genre of figurative art. Hers is a deceptively casual brushstroke. Whether in images a few inches square or ten feet high, fluidity combined with a pragmatic approach to representation seduces and disarms. Almost always depicting women or girls, sometimes in groups but recently in iconic portraits, Joffe’s paintings only waveringly adhere to their source – be it a photograph, magazine page or even a reflection in the mirror – instead reminding us that distortions of scale and form can often make a subject seem more real.

Born in 1969, the artist lives and works in London. She holds an MA from the Royal College of Art and was awarded the Royal Academy Wollaston Prize in 2006. Joffe has exhibited nationally and internationally with venues including The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, USA (2022); The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland (2021); The Foundling Museum, London, UK (2020); Arnolfini, Bristol, UK (2020); Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Scotland (2019); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2018); The Lowry, Salford (2018); Royal Academy of Arts, London (2018, 2017); National Museum of Iceland, Reykjavík (2016); National Portrait Gallery, London (2015); Jewish Museum, New York (2015); Jerwood Gallery, Hastings (2015); Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia, Italy (2014 – 2015); Saatchi Gallery, London (2013 – 2014); MODEM, Hungary (2012); Turner Contemporary, Margate (2011); Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York (2009); MIMA Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (2007); Galleri KB, Oslo (2005) and Bloomberg Space, London (2004).Her work is in numerous institutional and private collections, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Detroit Institute of Arts; National Portrait Gallery, London; and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Good looker but terrible performance
Color: 2-Speed Rechargeable Set with Charging Base
I purchased the product and the base would not attach from the charging module. This is their big selling point. I requested a replacement and sadly the replacement was of the same batch run as the original soo…. Yeah that base would not detach. There are videos showing how easy it is to detach base from charging module. Not theses units. Circle Joy customer service is an @gmail.com. They said base is not designed to be removed frequently. I reminded them the separation feature is their highlighted feature. I was just looking for a base. Circle Joy said no…. If I do not like either unit just return them to Amazon.???? In the meantime, after maybe a dozen grinds, the original unit quit grinding normally and would barely grind at all. I shook it out and it worked again but doesn’t sound right. Two takeaways: 1) Poor product quality. 2) I am sooo done with trying to work with Amazon on replacement items. Save yourself a tone of aggravation and just return the order and reorder if you dare. Otherwise good looking and heavy feel and works great about 10 times. Too bad so sad. Now I have this huge return hassle with Amazon.

Really Effective Utility
Color: Black/Black
I’m extremely impressed with this Electric Salt and Pepper Grinder Set! From the moment I started using it, it made seasoning meals so much easier and more enjoyable. The one-touch operation is incredibly convenient, especially when cooking with both hands occupied. The grinders are powerful, consistent, and produce the perfect grind every time. I also love the adjustable coarseness settings, which let me switch from a fine grind for everyday dishes to a coarser texture for steaks and salads. The build quality feels sturdy and premium, and the modern design looks great on my kitchen counter and dining table. Overall, this grinder set combines style, convenience, and performance perfectly. It’s a fantastic addition to any kitchen and would make a great gift as well. Highly recommended!

A Small Luxury That Makes a Big Difference
Color: Black/Black
I absolutely love these salt and pepper grinders. They’re sleek, modern, attractive on the table, and honestly much nicer looking than I expected for the price. They even come with their own little caddy, which keeps everything neat and organized and looks great when guests are over. What I love most is how easy they are to use. You simply press a button and instantly get perfectly ground salt or pepper. No twisting, no awkward grinding with two hands, no effort at all. I especially love this for pepper because I use a lot of it when cooking things like soups, lentils, and large meals. Before, hand grinding would make my arm tired, and sometimes I’d end up with uneven chunks of pepper. With these, the grind is smooth, even, and consistent every time. You just hold the button and move it around — quick, simple, and efficient. They also hold a generous amount of salt and pepper, so you’re not constantly refilling them every few days. Honestly, they make cooking easier, they look beautiful on the table, and they feel much more expensive than they are. Excellent purchase and a fantastic gift idea.

Great idea, great product
Color: Black/Black
I’ve been using this electric salt and pepper grinder set for a few weeks now and it’s one of those kitchen upgrades you don’t realize you needed until you have it. the top refill design makes it quick and easy to fill with course salt or peppercorns. It holds a good amount so youre not constantly refilling it I really appreciate that these grinders are rechargeable, and therefore a little more eco friendly. The battery life has been solid so far, and I haven’t had to worry about it dying mid-meal. Using it is super simple, It’s truly one-hand, one-button operation, which makes a big difference when you’re cooking. You can grind seasoning while stirring or holding a pan with your other hand. There’s also an LED light that turns on while grinding, so you can actually see how much seasoning you’re adding—small detail, but surprisingly helpful. There’s a small dial underneath that adjusts the grind size from course to fine. and the salt and pepper come out in a really uniform, consistent grind. Overall, the pros—easy refilling, rechargeable design, adjustable grind size, uniform results, —definitely outweigh the cons. It’s a practical, stylish upgrade that makes everyday cooking feel just a little easier and more polished.
