- Literature: Z.S.Strother, Pende
- In the past when this Mask was carved, Pende masks were considered as Mahamba, or tools or transistors facilitating contact between the Living and the World of the Dead. They were worn in the contexts of the Healing Rituals called Mukanda, the period of seclusion in a "bush school" or forest encampment where pubescent boys were circumcised and initiated into adulthood, and in the public masquerades that celebrated the boys' achievement and their return to normal village life as full-fledged adults. Certain Masks were reserved exclusively for the Mukanda while Mbuya, or Village masks, appeared to the general population.
- Mbuya Masks appear in public masquerades and represent a variety of characters, such as the Clown, the Hunter, the Judge, the Chief, the Chief's Wife, the Diviner, and the "Woman Who Flirts", among others. Each character has a distinct costume and accessories and its own dance steps and drumming rhythms. Mbuya masquerades entertain while teaching the Pende which behaviors to emulate and which ones to avoid.
- Masking, especially in the context of the Mukanda, began to wane during the 1930s under Belgian colonial pressures and the substitution of Midwives for the traditional Circumcisers. Most of what is known about masking in the old days in found in the published research of Léon de Sousberghe, a Belgian Jesuit anthropologist, who studied Pende visual arts in the 1950s. Zöe Strother, an American Art Historian, did field work on Pende masking during the 1980s and found that, although the traditional Mukanda was no longer held, masking was flourishing. Sculptors had invented new mask characters to be worn in masquerades that were for pure entertainment.

Good soap with a few details
Scent: Lemon, Scent: Lemon
I've been using this soap for several weeks now, and it's worked well for cleaning without drying out my skin. The foam is abundant and has a natural aroma, not strong at all. I like that it includes ingredients like turmeric and shea butter because my skin feels softer.
The only thing I noticed is that from the pigment, it can leave a slight yellow mark on sponges or cloths if they are not rinsed thoroughly, and the size of the stick is smaller than it looks in the photo.
Overall, it is a good natural choice for those looking for a different and gentle soap for daily use.

Felt commercial vs natural
Scent: Tea Tree
I got the tea tree soap and the first thing I noticed was it has a strong perfume smell that I don’t believe to be natural because I’ve had other kinds of tea tree soap bars and I prefer the other bars over these because I could actually smell the tea tree sent with the other bars and it was a nice mild scent in comparison to these that have a strong perfume scent. This soap didn’t bother my skin but it was not as effective as my other tea tree soap purchases I made prior to trying these. It came with a soap sack to help build up a soap lather but it was so cheaply made it felt apart after the second use. This soap appeared commercial in my opinion and it was made in china and I didn’t notice this prior to making my purchase. I would have avoided making this purchase knowing what I know now including my personal experience using this product.

Gentle but Effective Cleaner
Scent: Tea Tree
This tea tree oil soap does an excellent job of cleaning without being harsh on the skin. It removes dirt and oil effectively, yet my skin never feels dry or tight after use. The lather is rich and smooth, and the light tea tree scent feels fresh and refreshing. Thanks to the shea butter, my skin feels soft and moisturized, making it great for daily use on face, body, and hands. A solid choice if you want a natural soap that’s both gentle and effective.

Don't Be Fooled By The Title On The Box🩷
Scent: Citrus
Let me simply say that I KNOW this soap is the "real deal". I am not one to give an average product an excellent rating. When I spend my money on a product, I write about the positive (if any) as well as the negative. Since being sick from 2015 to 2019, my skin tone changed from a medium "sienna" to having an unnatural ashy cast that that makes me always look ill although I am well ,now. When I looked at myself in the mirror in natural light, that "ashy cast" to my complexion didn't look healthy or attractive. I had come to accept that this would probably be an issue the rest of my life. I am a lady that never used foundation makeup but, decided to try it as a last resort. Using foundation makeup only made me look worse. I accidently came across this item while searching for another type of soap. When it arrived and I saw "Men's Soap Set" on the box 👀😩, I was devasted. I had ordered something that I never intended to order. I was about to return the item when I heard a clear message in my mind directing me to try the soap. Several months ago, I prayed and asked Our Creator and Lord to make my complexion healthy in appearance. That prayer came back to mind and I tried the soap without any further hesitation. I wasn't expecting anything but, to my surprise the soap immediately started removing that "ashy cast" from my face. Let me make it crystal clear that I had tried dozens of other soaps and products that did absolutely nothing to help. I have only used this soap once. As I write this review it is almost 7:00pm ET and I haven't turned the lights on inside of the house yet. I glanced at myself in the mirror and I can see myself and that healthy tone coming back. My prayer has been answered and I'm beginning to look healthy again! As for this soap, I couldn't ask for a better value for the money. This soap is of amazing quality. I will continue to use it. Don't be fooled by what's written on the box. This soap is for ladies as well. I can only speak about my personal experience but, it's a superior product in my opinion and definitely worth a try for anyone that has had an unnatural change in complexion. I give it five SUPER SIZED stars!!! 🩷🩷🩷
