"George Nelson was an outstanding designer. We all know that. But my hunch is that, in a hundred years, he'll be even better remembered for his thinking and writing about design.' -- Stanley Abercrombie, architect and writer

Architect, designer, and author George Nelson (USA, 1908-1986) was a central figure in Modern American design; and his thoughts influenced not only the furniture we live with, but also how we live.

Nelson came to design via journalism and literature. Upon receiving his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Yale in 1931, he won the Prix de Rome fellowship, and spent his time in Europe writing magazine articles that helped bring stateside recognition to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Gio Ponti, Le Corbusier and other canonical modernist architects. In the 1940s, Nelson wrote texts that suggested such now-commonplace ideas as open-plan houses, storage walls and family rooms. D.J. Depree, the owner of the Herman Miller Furniture Company was so impressed by Nelson that in 1944 — following the sudden death of Gilbert Rohde, who had introduced the firm to modern design in the 1930s — he invited Nelson to join the company as its design director.

There Nelson’s curatorial design talents came to the fore. To Herman Miller he brought such eminent creators as Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, and the textile and furniture designer Alexander Girard. Thanks to a clever contract, at the same time as he directed Herman Miller he formed a New York design company, George Nelson & Associates, that sold furniture designs to the Michigan firm, as well as the Howard Miller Clock Company. Nelson’s New York team of designers (who were rarely individually credited) would create such iconic pieces as the “Marshmallow” sofa, the “Coconut” chair, the “Ball” clock, the “Bubble” lamp series and the many cabinets and beds that comprise the sleek “Thin-Edge” line.

These ACTUALLY stay put all day long - I was skeptical, but am so glad I took a chance on these
Size: Medium, Color: (014) Halo Gray / Halo Gray / Castlerock
I was so skeptical about whether these would stay on my feet all day without sliding down into my shoe - I’ve tried so many socks in the past with the silicone strip on the heel which failed. I’ve owned these for a couple months now and they have never slipped down - they stay put all day! I love the variety of colors to choose from, and the value per pack is great since six pairs come per pack (I thought it was only three when I first purchased and was pleasantly surprised by the additional pairs). They also have perfect thickness - not too warm to wear during the summer months with sneakers; I live in a tropical climate, though, so I’m not sure how they will do in cooler climates. I’ve washed each pair once or twice and the color and quality of the silicone has stayed so far (knock on wood). Overall: high recommend based on my experience so far!

No show but stays on
Size: Medium, Color: (014) Halo Gray / Halo Gray / Castlerock
I wear these socks daily. They truly don’t show with my workout shoes or with hey dudes. But the best thing about them is that they actually stay on your foot. I work out hard and I don’t ever have to pull them up. I do wish they were just a little bit thicker than they are, but they are definitely a product I will buy again.

Favorite Socks Ever
Size: Medium, Color: Black/Assorted, Size: Medium, Color: Black/Assorted
I absolutely love these socks, they compress in the middle which is my favorite thing about them! Keeps them from slipping off my feet and also adds support, love love love how they feel and how long they last! This is my second pack that I’ve purchased, I had the multi colored ones before and they’ve lasted me two years before finally starting to wear out and fade and get holes. Definitely going to be routinely buying these every year. Good to wear with my work out shoes...winter boots, Nike sandals, and my everyday adidas sneakers. These are so worth it!
