Sun Wukong, “the Great Sage Equal to Heaven,” also known as the Monkey King, is a literary and religious figure best known as one of the main characters in the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West.
Sun Wukong is born out from a holy stone which was once used by Nuwa to fix the shattered skies.
He holds his monkey family in the Cave of Water Curtain (Shuilian Dong), so that he is also called the “Monkey King.” Then he leaves his cave, and becomes an apprentice to Master Bodhi and gets the name “Sun Wukong.”
