INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to the Prepare Furniture Surfaces for Quality Finishing course. This course only includes a challenge assessment designed to assess your knowledge and skills required to demonstrate competence in determining surface preparation requirements, preparing different furniture surfaces for finishing, identifying and rectifying faults, using tools and materials safely, managing contamination controls and completing clean-up, maintenance, waste, records and reporting requirements.
Preparing furniture surfaces for quality finishing involves interpreting work documentation, identifying surface characteristics, coating materials and efficient work methods, preparing the work area to prevent contamination and selecting suitable tools, equipment, materials and engineering controls. In real workplace practice, this skill area is important because the quality of the final coating depends on surfaces being correctly prepared, inspected, fault-free and suitable for the required finishing process.
The course assessment focuses on your ability to determine task requirements, surface characteristics, coating materials and work methods; follow WHS requirements; select and set up materials, tools, equipment and engineering controls; exclude contamination sources; prepare furniture surfaces by hand or machine, including internal, curved, hardwood, softwood, MDF, veneered board and metal surfaces; identify, rectify or report faults and defects; inspect and approve surfaces for further finishing; understand coating types, characteristics and workflow; use preparation tools and materials safely; clean, check, store and maintain equipment, unused materials and prepared items; and manage chemicals, waste, recycling, records and reporting.
By successfully completing this course assessment, you will have demonstrated that you can prepare furniture surfaces for quality finishing by interpreting work requirements, applying safety and contamination controls, selecting and using suitable tools, equipment and materials, preparing varied surface types to specification, identifying and managing faults or defects, confirming readiness for further finishing processes and completing required clean-up, storage, maintenance, chemical, waste, recycling, record and reporting activities in accordance with workplace procedures.
