Rega Aos MC Moving Coil Phono Stage at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Rega Aos MC is a dedicated moving coil phono preamplifier from Rega Research (Southend-on-Sea, Essex, UK), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Introduced at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show 2026, the Aos MC sits between the Fono MC MK4 and the reference Aura MC in Rega's phono stage lineup, bringing Aura MC circuit topology to a more accessible price point at approximately one third the cost of the five-star Aura MC. A fully analogue two-stage design with no digital control circuitry anywhere in the signal path, the Aos MC delivers RIAA accuracy better than ±0.2dB from 65Hz to 70kHz, two gain settings of 69.3dB and 63.5dB, and four resistive MC loading positions from 70 to 400 ohms, all housed in a full aluminium half-width case for RFI shielding.

Aura-Derived FET Circuit Architecture and Pure Class A Signal Path

The Aos MC's circuit topology is drawn directly from the Aura MC reference phono stage, with Rega's engineering team adapting the Aura's two-stage Class A FET architecture into the half-width chassis format while preserving the core signal path philosophy. The first stage uses Linear Systems ultra-low noise Field Effect Transistors in a symmetrical, complementary Class A configuration, carefully graded and matched in parallel pairs for optimum noise performance. FET transistors are preferred over bipolar transistors precisely because they draw no bias current through the cartridge coil — any DC bias current flowing through a moving coil cartridge's delicate coil winding would disturb the magnetic geometry of the cartridge and degrade its output. No coupling components exist between the cartridge output and the input stage FET transistors, eliminating a degradation point present in many competing phono stage designs. The second stage is a symmetrical Class A differential amplifier with a common base driver stage, which also serves as the active amplifier for the low-frequency section of the RIAA equalisation network.

Aura-Derived Servo, Adjustable Loading, and System Compatibility

The self-adjusting servo control trickled down from the Aura MC compensates for variations in ambient and operating temperature, maintaining stable Class A operating conditions without requiring warm-up time or manual adjustment. Resistive input loading is selectable across four positions — 70, 100, 150, and 400 ohms — via rear-panel dip switches, covering the loading requirements of Ortofon Cadenza, Lyra Delos, van den Hul, and Rega's own Ania, Apheta 3, and Aphelion 2 cartridges, for which the Aos MC ships factory pre-set at the 69.3dB high gain setting. Capacitive loading of 1000pF and 4300pF provides additional compatibility flexibility. The automatic standby function reduces power consumption to 0.4W when no signal is detected and can be disabled via rear-panel dip switch for listeners who prefer continuous operation. For vinyl systems in Toronto pairing the Aos MC with Rega Planar 6, Planar 8, or Planar 10 turntables, the Aos MC represents the natural Aura-circuit step up from the Aria MC for serious two-channel analogue listening.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Rega Aos MC?

The Rega Aos MC is a dedicated moving coil phono preamplifier from Rega Research of the UK, available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. It sits between the Fono MC MK4 and the reference Aura MC in Rega's lineup, using Aura-derived two-stage Class A FET circuit topology with no digital control circuitry, Linear Systems matched parallel FETs in the first stage, a self-adjusting temperature servo, four resistive loading positions from 70 to 400 ohms, two gain settings of 69.3dB and 63.5dB, and RIAA accuracy better than ±0.2dB from 65Hz to 70kHz. It was first shown at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show 2026 and praised by What Hi-Fi? as bringing customers closer to Aura performance at a more accessible price.

How does the Rega Aos MC compare to the Aria MC and Aura MC?

The Rega Aos MC sits above the Aria MC and below the Aura MC in Rega's phono stage lineup. The Aria MC uses a different circuit architecture at a lower price point, while the Aos MC draws its circuit topology directly from the reference Aura MC — the same FET device selection, two-stage Class A layout, temperature servo, and signal path philosophy — at approximately one third the Aura MC's cost. The Aura MC adds a mono mode button, Rega's highest-specification output stage, and full reference flagship build quality. AVForums described the Aos as Rega paring back its reference Aura phono stage, questioning whether the result is minimalist perfection.

Which MC cartridges are compatible with the Rega Aos MC?

The Rega Aos MC is factory pre-set for all Rega MC cartridges — the Ania, Apheta 3, and Aphelion 2 — at the 69.3dB high gain setting. Beyond Rega cartridges, the four resistive loading positions from 70 to 400 ohms accommodate Ortofon Cadenza series, Lyra Delos and Kleos, van den Hul, Audio-Technica ART series, Dynavector, and Hana cartridges. Low-output MC cartridges producing under 0.5mV benefit from the 69.3dB Gain I setting, while standard-output MCs between 0.5mV and 1mV typically use Gain II at 63.5dB to avoid overload with standard line inputs.

Why does the Rega Aos MC use FET transistors instead of bipolar transistors?

FET transistors are preferred for MC phono stage input stages because they draw no bias current through the cartridge coil. Moving coil cartridges generate their signal through the motion of an extremely fine wire coil in a magnetic field, and any DC bias current from a bipolar transistor input stage would disturb the cartridge's delicate magnetic geometry and degrade its output characteristics. FETs are voltage-controlled devices that draw essentially zero current from the input source, leaving the cartridge's coil and magnetic system completely undisturbed. The Linear Systems FETs used in the Aos MC are carefully graded and matched in parallel pairs for minimum noise and consistent performance.

Can the automatic standby on the Rega Aos MC be disabled?

Yes, the automatic standby function can be disabled via dip switches on the rear panel of the Aos MC, allowing the unit to remain fully powered without entering standby mode. Listeners who prefer to leave their phono stage continuously powered to maintain consistent Class A operating temperature can disable standby and leave the Aos MC running permanently at its 20W operating consumption.

Buddy filled diesel skid steer with automotive gas engine oil. Used this to help.
We all know that guy who will buy a $65,000 machine and then only service it once a year with the cheapest oil on the shelf from Rural King or some other place with ultra cheap, home branded, questionably quality oil. Yep. That is my good buddy. So I go to the shop a couple weeks back and he is re-filling the skid steer engine with some ultra cheap, totally not to spec, gas engine oil. I question him and he states that it is perfect oil for the machine being 5W-30. I ask him if it meets the SAE ratings for the diesel, he repeats back that yep... it is 5W-30. So I go grab his New Holland book (C232 track skid steer) and look up the oil requirements, then I look at this junk oil, and I try to explain to him the SAE designations on the back of the bottle and the SAE requirements in the book. He looks at me like I have 3 heads and repeats that it is 5W-30, it is totally good. Someone.... kill me please! He has no clue what I am trying to explain. So I couldn't sleep knowing what he is doing, and I ran to Amazon to see if I can at least get zinc to add to the wrong oil and try to help the cam followers and rockers survive this next year. I found this. I ordered a few bottles and had them shipped to his shop, and I explained to him that these need to be dumped in to at least make an attempt in not prematurely wear the engine that likely is worth $20,000 or more! So the real question is, will he actually dump these into the machine, or will he toss them on a shelf never to be seen again? We may never know. But I bet next winter he will once again shop for the cheapest oil on earth to put in a machine that costs as much as some peoples home. He is who he is, you can never change that.

High quality replacement clips. Highly recommend.
I used these when replacing the headlight assemblies on my 2011 Honda CR-V. A few clips were already missing before I even started taking the bumper off, and of course a couple more didn’t survive the job. These fit perfectly and snapped right in with no issues. If you’re missing clips or break some while doing a repair, these are a simple fix that gets everything secured again. Very good deal.
